Institute for Emerging Issues • NC Governor Hunt Initiative • Established in 2002 • Housed at NC State University • Dedicated to seeding innovations through civic engagement, cooperative leadership and informed problem-solving in the areas of: • Education, Health, the Natural & Built Environments, and the Economy

  4. Today’s North Carolina • Post-Secondary Education Gap • In 2008, 38.5% associates degree or higher • By 2018 it’s projected 59% will require • Racial / Ethnic Performance Gaps • State Grad rate 77.9% • Latino Grad rate 68.8% • 29% gap in college enrollment between whites and Latinos

  5. 2012 Emerging Issues Forum – Investing in Generation Z • February 2012 • 1000 attendees + 200 Gen Z ambassadors • Three approaches: • Economic & Workforce Future • Connectivity • Wellbeing

  6. Who is Gen Z? • Later half of the Millennial Generation • Born between 1990 and 2002 • 1.5 million Gen Zers in N.C. • Youthful core of our workforce & communities • They will be 18-30 in 2020 • Ethnically Diverse • Digitally/Technology Savvy • Globally Aware

Why Focus on Generation Z? • Core of our state’s emerging labor force in just 8-10 years • Their economic and workforce future look vastly different • Impacted by Great Recession • Too few students prepared with skills necessary • Expected to have a lower standard of living and life expectancy than parents

  8. Why Focus on Generation Z? • These youth have grown up in an age when the following has always existed: • Internet • GPS Satellite Nav. Systems • Their friendships are qualifiable by Facebook

  9. Why Focus on Generation Z? • Customization / Choice is a “Must-Have”: • Charter schools have always existed • 100+ cable / satellite channels • Customize music (the “playlist”) • Constant Connectivity: • Texting, Instant messaging, Facebook, Twitter, Skype

  10. Why Focus on Generation Z? • Skeptical Idealists • Resourceful • Guided by Self-Discovery • Process Information at “Lightning” Speeds
