  1. Forms of Government a.k.a Political Systems

  2. What kind of Government do we have? • A vague answer would be • Democracy- The people rule either directly or indirectly (example of vague- Where do you live? Earth) not wrong, just vague!

  3. A more specific answer would be • Representative democracy- the people rule but indirectly. • We vote for or elect leaders to run the government for us. • We call these leaders representatives. • We are not a pure or direct democracy.

  4. Most Specific Answer(the best one) • We have a Presidential Democracy • The peopleelect legislature (law makers like our congress AND they also elect the President (chief law enforcer)

  5. MORE CLOSELY • Democracy DEMO in Greek means: people Kratia in Greek means: rule Two types of Representative Democracy are: Presidential (US) Parliamentary(Canada)

  6. We have a ? • Presidential Democracy (as we now know) • A Parliamentary Democracy- The people elect the legislature (law makers) like Canada’s Parliament BUT the Prime Minister (Chief law enforcer) is chosen by parliament not the people.

  7. Where does the power come from? • Whether presidential or parliamentary, where does a democratic leader’s power come from? • WE THE PEOPLE

  8. How do we participate? • In a representative democracy we should always participate in our government: • Vote, run for office, contact our representatives, attend community meetings, register others to vote, protest, join a political party, support a candidate, etc.

  9. Difference? • The primary difference between presidential and parliamentary democracy is - • We vote for our president • Their prime minister is chosen by legislature (parliament)

  10. Monarchy • Monarch is just a fancy word for _King or Queen.

  11. INHERITED POWER • Monarchy - (Mono = _One_) (archy = _ruler_) _A type of government ruled by one person____ • usually called king or queen who is born into power.

  12. 2 types of Monarchy • 1. _Absolute_____ _Monarchy______ (example:Saudi Arabia_) The king or queen has absolute (or total) power to make, enforce, and interpret the laws. The rights of citizens under absolute monarchies are severely limited and they have no power to vote as government officers are chosen by the monarch.

  13. Limited Power Monarchy • 2. _Constitutional_____ (or limited) _Monarchy_____ (example:Great Britain_)The king or queen is not above the law & must obey it just like all other citizens. The people have power to elect leaders other than the king or queen. Queen Elizabeth of England is Queen because her father was the King before her. Her power is very limited and she must obey & uphold the law. There is also a legislature called Parliament and its members are elected by the people. Citizens have greater freedom & rights under this type of Monarchy.

  14. Where is the Power in limited monarchy? • Where does a monarch’s (king or queen) power come from? _It is inherited (they are born intopower) but it still comes from the people.

  15. Compare/contrast • How are Absolute and Constitutional Monarchs alike? _Both are called king or queen and both inherit power. • How are Absolute and Constitutional Monarchs different? _One had total power and the other has limited power. Elections in one system but not the other. People have more rights under one.

  16. Dictatorship • The third form of government that we will examine is Dictatorship (example:North Korea).

  17. A) _Totalitarian____ - comes from the root word total because one person or a small group of people have complete or total power to make, enforce, and interpret the laws. • B) _Dictator______ - the leader of a totalitarian government, so called because he dictates (commands) what the people may and may not do. Dictators take and hold their power by exerting force and fear over their people. • C) _Dictatorship___ - another name for a totalitarian government.

  18. Theocracy • The fourth type of government we will exam is Theocracy (example: _Iran_). Theocracy (Gk Theo = _God_) (Gk Kratia = _rule_) - _A government ruled by religious leaders.

  19. Oligarchy • Oligos in Greek means few • Oligarchy is a government where the power rests in the hands of a few. • The few could be the very rich, very educated, military, corporations, wealthy families, etc.
