  2. Absolute Monarchy • A government who is ruled by a queen or king who is not limited by any laws • Divine right, absolute power

  4. Anarchy • A government where no authority exists. • Or simply: NO GOVERNMENT

  6. Aristocracy • A government in where the power rests with the upper class

  7. Aristocracies • Pre-revolution France • Almost every European nation until mid-1850’s-ish

  8. Democracy • People rule by voting or voicing their opinions • Direct, representative Not REALLY the best way

  9. Democracies • Ancient Athens (direct) • U.S. (representative)

  10. Dictatorship • When the ruling party has no restrictions. • Their word is law. • Military

  11. Dictatorships • Nazi Germany • Italy under Mussolini • Spain under Franco • Iraq under Hussein

  12. Limited/Constitutional Monarchy • A queen or king must behave according to certain laws and usually shares power with other branches of government

  13. Limited monarchies • Japan • United Kingdom

  14. Oligarchy • When government is in the hands of a small group of people who make all the laws and decisions • Sparta’s Council of Elders

  15. Republic • Where people elect representatives to vote on matters for them • Ancient Rome (pre-Caesar)

  16. Theocracy • Government based on religion

  17. Theocracies • Vatican City • Iran

  18. Totalitarianism • The state is more important than the individual. • Almost every aspect of society is controlled.

  19. Totalitarian regimes • U.S.S.R. (Soviet Union) • North Korea
