Forms of Government Essential Question: What are some of the different types of governments that exist in the world? Which would you choose? Why?

Democracy • Comes from a Greek word meaning “demos” = people “kratos”= power • Democracy=Rule by the people. • An elected leader holds the power • People have liberty, freedom, rights • People vote to elect a leader • Two types of democracy. • Direct Democracy – citizens rule directly. • Republic-citizens rule through representatives (indirect democracy) • If citizens are unhappy with a leader in a democracy they can…vote to elect a new leader • Example: The United States (President), Great Britain (Prime Minister)
Republic • The people elect a Representative to represent a group of people in a Legislative body • Leaders are voted on by the people
Totalitarianism • Rule by a single person or party with total control. • People have no rights, no freedom. • The leaders power is absolute • Leader has the authority to punish citizens for dissent and force them into silence • There are different types of Totalitarianism • Ex. individual dictatorship, group dictatorship, communism and fascism. • Example Iraq under Sadam Hussein, North Korea • If citizens are unhappy with a leader in a Totalitarian state they can…start a revolution
Communism • One person/party rules. • People have no rights/freedoms • Goal is a classless society • No private property • Origins are from Karl Marx • Goal: To spread communism worldwide • Example: Fidal Castro in Cuba, North Korea, China, Soviet Union
Fascism • One person/party rules. • People have no rights/freedoms. • There are private property and classes. • Followers wear specific colors/clothing and have special uniforms. • Goal: Extreme nationalism and control. • Examples: Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini
Monarchy • Rule by a King or a Queen. • Hereditary: Rule passes from a related blood line, rule is inherited • The leader has absolute power • Different types of Monarchies: • Absolute Monarchy • Constitutional Monarchy • Example: Queen Elizabeth of England
Theocracy • Religious rule • Laws come from a “religious book” and are guided by God • God is the head of state and holds all the power • Leaders claim divine rights or guidance from God • Today, these laws would be considered antiquated or old fashioned. • Example: • Afghanistan (Taliban) • Iran (highest power is a Muslim Ayatollah or preacher.) • Vatican City (Pope)
Aristocracy/Oligarchy • Rule by the upper class. • Rule by the elite.
Anarchy • No government. • Absence of order. • Usually chaos until order is established. • Example: Free Territory of Ukraine
