  1. What are analogies? Analogies are a way of comparing two things with words. Most common analogies are ones that find similarities between the features of two things or ones that compare things that are opposite of each other.

  2. Working with Analogies • Here are some simple examples: • Newspaper is to Read as Chair is to Sit We compared two things…newspaper and read. Then we took two completely different words and compared them in the same way. A newspaper is to read just like a chair is made to sit in.

  3. Let’s Try Another Analogy • Hot is to Cold as Up is to Down This is an example of an opposite comparison. Now you try one on your own. • Out is to In as No is to ______

  4. And your answer is… (Tap the screen and the answer will appear.) • Out and In are opposite so you look for the opposite of No which is ____. Yes, the answer is YES. Yes

  5. Try Another One • Coffee is to Drinking as Cake is to _______ (Click Slide for Answer) Coffee:Drinking as Cake:Eating

  6. Yes, Eating is Correct! • We drink coffee the same as we eat cake. • Notice how the grammar stayed the same: drinking and eating. • Also, a colon was used instead of “is to”. • Another way to write this analogy would be Coffee:Drinking::Cake:Eating

  7. Test Your Knowledge My class created these analogies for you to solve. We hope you are challenged and learn more about analogies.
