  1. Be Informed for SEMIC.EU Dr. Brand Niemann Director and Senior Data Scientist Semantic Community http://semanticommunity.info/ AOL Government Blogger http://breakinggov.com/author/brand-niemann/ October 14, 2013 http://semanticommunity.info/Be_Informed_for_SEMIC.EU

  2. Background • MichielMalotaux, in 2009 as a Gartner VP, was convinced that Be Informed could solve a score of legacy problems at the EC/EP and facilitated Be Informed prototypes for several EU institutions. • My SEMIC.EU 2011 keynote and briefing to European Commission DG DIGIT (CIO) Paco Garcia Moran advised piloting of Be Informed. • At the recent SEMIC 2013 Conference, Eurostats' Marco Pellegrino keynote on “Maintaining the quality of EU statistics while enabling re-use”, highlighted the potential benefits and main challenges on the publication of statistical data as linked open data at the European Union Open Data Portal. • I have recommend the US Federal CIO Council, and more recently the Japanese Government, have statisticians and data scientists use quality data for linked data, statistics, and data stories for decision-makers.

  3. Previous Dashboard My Notes: 2011 SEMIC.EU Keynote with Ten Tabs and 17 Data Sets! Spotfire Search: Find-ability and Facet Filtering for Both Structured and Unstructured Content. https://silverspotfire.tibco.com/us/library#/users/bniemann/Public?SEMIC.EU-Spotfire

  4. SEMIC - Semantic Interoperability Community My Note: Evolution of their platforms from OSOR.EU-to-SEMIC.EU-to-Joinup is problem with achieving vision. https://joinup.ec.europa.eu/community/semic/description

  5. Goals • Make the New SEMIC.EU Content an Executable Semantic Knowledge Base and Model with Linked Data; • Include Some Data Integration Pilots in a Dashboard; • Build Semantic Data Science Products Using Josh Tauberer’s Four Steps: • Step 1 Get the Data (quick search of new SEMIC to update previous) • Step 2 Scrub the Data (Format Edge and Node Tables) • Step 3 Build Something (Add to previous Knowledge Bases, Spreadsheets, and Dashboards) • Step 4 Distribute (Model, Business Process Documentation, and Executable Application in a Data Story) • Use the Be Informed Be Free Getting Started Applications. "Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while.“ Steve Jobs

  6. Knowledge Base: MindTouch My Note: The entire platform can be searched. My Note: The Semantic Community Platform includes MindTouch (Wiki), Spotfire (Analytics), and Be Informed (Be Free). This page can be search by Google Chrome Find. http://semanticommunity.info/Be_Informed_for_SEMIC.EU

  7. Knowledge Base: Spreadsheet My Note: All of these spreadsheets can be searched. My Note: The Semantic Community approach is consistent with the ISA Recommended URI Design and Management Principles. http://semanticommunity.info/@api/deki/files/26666/ECISAJoinup2013.xlsx

  8. Knowledge Base: Spotfire https://silverspotfire.tibco.com/ViewAnalysis.aspx?file=/users/bniemann/Public/ECISAJoinup2013-Spotfire.dxp

  9. Knowledge Base: Be Informed http://semanticommunity.info/Be_Informed_Be_Free

  10. Conclusions and Recommendations • The SEMIC.EU platforms have evolved, but still do not do what the Semantic Community platform does. • The SEMIC.EU Semantic Assets are very limited in number and reusability for building serious semantic business applications. • The Semantic Community approach is consistent with the ISA Recommended URI Design and Management Principles. • The Be Informed Business Process Platform has been and is being used to build serious semantic business applications for the EU and others. • The SEMIC.EU Pilots should include the use of the Semantic Community and Be Informed platforms and pilots.
