  2. Free Throw Administration • At the completion of this Module the student should: • Know the proper positions of the officials • Know where each official starts on a free throw • Understand basic rules for a Free Throw Administration

  4. Free Throw Lineups

Free Throw Lineup • Team B (team without the ball) must be located above two lower block • Lane area from the end line to, and including, the neutral zone marks shall remain vacant • Maximum 4 Defensive and 2 Offensive on lane line • All other players • Above the 3 point line • Above the FT lane line

  11. Free Throw Lineup • Team B (opponent of free thrower) must set up in the first space (closest to basket allowed) • If Team B does not set up on the first shot, then it is a violation on Team B • After violation on Team B, you have a technical foul on Team B

  21. Basic Free Throw Coverage Primary Coverage on Free Throw • Trail • Table Side (2 Person) • Has Free Throw Shooter • And the two highest positions opposite lane line • Lead • Opposite Table (2 Person) • First player closest to Lead and all players opposite lane line

  24. Basic Mechanics • Center Official • Always Opposite Table • Has 10 Second Count • “Chops” clock on missed free throw • Rebounding responsibility • Close Down on attempt

  25. Basic Mechanics • Lead Official • Always Table Side • Administers all Free Throws • After made basket (and final Free Throw) is responsible for “Chopping” Clock on throw in • Rebounding responsibility

  26. Basic Mechanics • Trail Official • Always Table Side • Primarily responsible for substitutions • Helps with all Free Throw coverage issues • May have to watch players not on the Free Throw Lane • Also has rebounding responsibility • Close Down on attempt • Assist partners on coverage

Basic Mechanics • All Officials (2 or 3 Officials) • Knowing the correct amount of Free Throws awarded • Making sure subs are properly entering the game • Making sure all players are lined up properly • If anything is wrong get it corrected before anything is started • Call Obvious Violations • Know the clock status!!!

  30. Free Throw Violations

Free Throw Violations • 10 seconds for thrower to shoot • Free thrower and players on lane marked spaces cannot fake to cause violation • No disconcertion • Enter or leave a marked lane space • Free thrower shall not have either foot beyond the vertical plane of the edge of the FT line which is farther from the basket or the free throw semi-circle

Free Throw Violations • A player not the FTer who does not occupy a marked lane space, may not have either foot beyond the vertical plane of the FT line extended and the 3 point line which is farthest from the basket • A player occupying a marked lane space may not have either foot beyond the vertical plane of the outside edge of any lane boundary or beyond the vertical edge of the space designated by a neutral zone

  33. Free Throw Violations • Violations committed by: • Free Thrower team • First violation or only violation • Play becomes dead immediately • No FT can be awarded • Second violation is ignored

  34. Free Throw Violations • Violations committed by: • Opponents of Free throw team • Commits first violation • Play continues • FT is successful violation is disregarded • Second lane line violation is ignored

  37. Free Throw Violations • Simultaneous Violations • Both teams commit a violation • Alternating Possession • Ball placed at nearest spot • Not a Simultaneous Violation • Lane line violations

  38. Free Throw Violations • Double Violation • Lane Line and Non-Lane Line Violation • Lane Line and Thrower Violation • Two Lane line violations, are not a double violation • Ball is dead immediately • Go to the Alternating Possession Arrow

  39. Resumption Play Procedure

  40. Resumption Play Procedure • Rule is in place to prevent a delay after a timeout or intermission • Administering official shall sound the whistle to indicate play will resume • Ball should be placed at the disposal of the thrower or placed on the floor

  41. Resumption Play Procedure • Either team or both teams may be charged with a violation • Following a violation by one or both teams, if offended team continues to delay • Technical Foul shall be charged • Do everything to prevent this from becoming an issue

Free Throw Substitutions • All substitutions can take place before a FT when the ball can be live • Last of multiple FTs • 1 and 1 Situations • Any player must be substituted for when they are: • When player has to leave game by rule • Disqualified player • Injury (if coach is beckoned) • Blood Rule • Technical Foul Shots

  44. Substitutions Coverage Two and Three Person Mechanics • Trail Official • Primarily responsible for substitutions • Center and Lead • Secondary on substitutions • All officials make sure proper substitutions are made

  47. Technical Fouls • No players on the lane line • Any player can shoot each free throw • Substitutes • Multiple FTs • Normal Substitution rules apply • Throw-In at the division line, opposite the table

Intentional Fouls • No players on the lane lines • Only fouled player can shoot • Unless player is injured • Sub the is the only one that can shoot • Two shots on most intentional fouls • Three shots on a missed 3 point attempt • Two shots on made attempt • Normal substitution rules apply • Throw-in at the spot of the foul after FTs
