  4. “Cultural Area” • Oceania is a cultural area, not a continent! • Australia • There are 10 of these “cultural areas” in the world • Classified by “unifying civilization” • which provides a common cultural foundation throughout the region

Islands • Pacific Islands • Three main types (atoll, volcanic, continental) • Elevation • Low lying areas • Coral Islands • Midway • Very important during World War II • Military Bases • Many have sparse population, if even inhabited • Many challenges! • Indigenous cultures • Colonization • Larger islands (Australia, New Zealand) • Smaller islands are less developed and combine resources and governments to form “confederations”

Population • Less than one percent of the world’s population • 7/10 people live in urban areas • 9/10 in Australia and New Zealand live in cities • Less than half live in cities in Polynesia and Melanesia • 4/5 people in Oceania are Christians • 2/3 are Protestant • 1/3 are Roman Catholics • Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism • 1/10 practice no religion • Smaller percentage practice traditional religions
