  1. SPIRE Brokerage event December 16th 2013 SUSTAINABLE PROCESSINDUSTRY EUROPEAN INDUSTRIAL COMPETTIVENESS TROUGH Resource and energyefficiency Project Idea Presentation Zurich University of Applied Sciences

  2. Institute of Chemistry and Biological Chemistry ZuRICHUNIVERSITy OF APPLIED SCIENCES The Institute of Chemistry and Biological Chemistry (ICBC) at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences runs an application driven research and development program aiming at sustainable and innovative processes and solutions. Areas of activity include chemical and biochemical engineering, miniaturized and continuous processes, new sustainable processes for existing and new products, chemical and biochemical catalysis, novel materials for applications in several fields. Resource and energy efficiency, functionalized coating applications, light management, advanced catalysis, tissue engineering, drug discovery, in silicodrug design and syntheses, molecularly imprinted polymers, downstream processing - proteins, are examples of our main interests. Our cutting-edge technologies, research facilities and highly specialized expertise bring successful collaborations with industry (SMEs, start-ups, large companies) and academia at Swiss and European level. We create and develop more sustainable processes and advanced materials for industrial applications and green chemistry.

  3. KEYWORDS: •  resource and energy efficiency •  functionalized coating applications •  light management, PV •  advanced catalysis •  green chemistry • nanoporous materials •  tissue engineering, 3D bioprinting •  drug discovery •  in silico drug design and synthesis •  medicinal chemistry • MIP, fiber-spinning •  protein downstream processing • analytics, sensory applications •  aroma profiles (coffee, volatiles) •  bioengineering, biofilms

  4. Development and industrial implementation of fast and sensitive technologies for the on-line and real-time monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for process control Motivation: Volatile compounds are continuously emitted from products during processing along the whole value chain. These are sensitive markers of such processes and their time-resolved monitoring allows a better control and optimization with respect to quality at each step, consistency, and waste reduction.

  5. Products Processing Raw Materials Development and industrial implementation of fast and sensitive technologies for the on-line and real-time monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for process control Project Idea 1: Processing of agro- food products SPIRE – 1: INTEGRATED PROCESS CONTROL K.A. 2.3.: Process monitoring, control and optimization food products, all along the food chain, emit volatile compounds • Volatile compounds represent only a very small fraction of a food product, yet they are related to important properties and can be monitored non-invasively • flavour • age, shelf-life • origin (geographic, genetic) • history of treatment and processing • safety • quality

  6. Development and industrial implementation of fast and sensitive technologies for the on-line and real-time monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for process control Project Idea 1: Processing of agro- food products SPIRE – 1: INTEGRATED PROCESS CONTROL K.A. 2.3.: Process monitoring, control and optimization Project Impact: • Raw material quality testing: traceability and transparency of origins and labelling • History of production and processing treatments of intermediate products • Age, shelf-life and freshness • Safety. Early identification of potential safety hazard • Testingand enforcement of legal or safety standards (shelf-life, quality deterioration, contamination); can be used as early warning systems. • Process optimisation • Optimalprocessing for increased quality and reduced input (energy, time, raw materials and ingredients) with the possibility of direct feedback control • Reduction of emissions and energy consumption Related Industries: • Food processing • Manufacturing • Pharmaandbiotech • Engineering • Chemicals

  7. Development and industrial implementation of fast and sensitive technologies for the on-line and real-time monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for process control Project Idea 2: More efficient roasting equipment SPIRE – 1: INTEGRATED PROCESS CONTROL K.A. 2.4.: More efficient systems and equipment

  8. Development and industrial implementation of fast and sensitive technologies for the on-line and real-time monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for process control Project Idea 2: More efficient coffee / cocoa roasting equipment SPIRE – 1: INTEGRATED PROCESS CONTROL K.A. 2.4.: More efficient systems and equipment Project Impact: • Design, redesignofnewandexistingequipment • Process design • Enhanced efficiency • Betterutilizationofrawmaterials • Defined and consistent product quality • Online control of flavour and roast degree • More energy efficient roasting • Lower emissions during processing Related Industries: • Food processing • Manufacturing • Pharmaandbiotech • Engineering • Chemicals
