  1. SPIRE Brokerage event December16th 2013 SUSTAINABLE PROCESSINDUSTRY EUROPEAN INDUSTRIAL COMPETTIVENESS TROUGH Resource and energyefficiency Biomass Clay Granulate

  2. todaytheworld'slargestproducerofbricksandNo. 1 on theclayrooftilesmarket in Europe, with221 plantsin 30 countries • EUR 2,355.5 miorevenuesand • 13,060 employees in 2012 • Our project idea applies for: • SPIRE 2 – 2014: Adaptable industrial processes allowing the use of renewables as flexible feedstock for chemical and energy applications

  3. Project Idea Concept How to bring biomass into a kiln for ceramic products? Avoid contamination of bricks & tiles with ash? Tailor made solid fuel: Biomass-Clay granulate e.g.: 90% biomass + 10% clay

  4. Project Idea Concept • biomass-claygranulate is put into heating zone • biomasswill reduce natural gas demand • claywill incorporate ash of biomass – no influence on product quality • clay-ash granulate is recycled for brick & tiles production – replacement of raw material possible

  5. Biomass-Clay Granulate • up to 30% less fossil energy demand • co-firing process with biomass for existing kilns • bolt on technology – use of existing infrastructure in ceramic processes • involvement of local suppliers of biomass (wood, renewables) • use of local clays to form biomass-clay granulate • reduced demand of primary feed stock e.g. sand fillers could be replaced by recycled clay-ash granulate

  6. Looking for partners… in the fields of: • pellets producer • granulation & agglomeration specialists • solid fuel distribution systems biomass firing industry • energy management systems • integrated process control systems • dissemination
