  1. SPIRE Project Idea Presentation SUSTAINABLE PROCESSINDUSTRY EUROPEAN INDUSTRIAL COMPETTIVENESS TROUGH Resource and energyefficiency GEnIUs : Gasification for Energy Intensive Users

  2. CIRCE is a research centre founded in 1993 with the support of the University of Zaragoza. CIRCE’s mission is to drive forward improvements in energy efficiency and to spread the use of renewable energy by means of the development of R+D+i (Research, Development and Innovation) activities and formative actions that respond to the needs of national and international producers, thereby contributing to sustainable development. TERREAL was created in 2000 after the merger of 3 French brick and tile manufacturers. Originally exclusively a clay product manufacturer, TERREAL enlarged its range of products to the “building envelope” in 2006 by combining its different fields of expertise in roofing, cladding and structural materials. TERREAL is a natural player of the energy efficient building envelope : its range of products is entirely dedicated to green building solutions. Organization

  3. Reference document • SPIRE Roadmap 2030 : • KA 2.1; Novel advanced energy technologies • HORIZON 2020 : • SPIRE 2 – 2014: Adaptable industrial processes allowing the use of renewable as flexible feedstock for chemical and energy applications

  4. Project Idea Concept • Substitution of fossil fuel (like natural gas) by Syngas in thermal processes like the combustion process for firing / drying ceramics in kilns / dryers • Gasification of a new energy feedstock like non-recyclable / non-hazardous waste (Solid Recovered Fuel) or by-products (biomass) • Diversified logistic (depending on local availability in quantity, quality, time and cost) and management (preparation) of the feedstock • Reduce • carbon footprint (depending on biomass content and legislation) • dependence to natural gas as a captive energy source • cost of energy (€/MWh and Carbon credit) • Increase energy efficiency through an energy integration of a well-adapted process control • Sustain local symbiosis and circular economy (waste to energy) 4

  5. Project Idea Rational • For Energy Intensive Users, energy cost constitutes a large proportion of total production cost • Industries are committed to better manage energy on a daily basis (like EMS) or to make investment for the reduction of the fossil fuel consumption (like heat recovery, heat pumps, ORC, …) • On a longer term perspective, this will not be sufficient and only renewable energy integration will make a significant impact • to reduce the energy intensive industries greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions • and to maintain the sustainability of the industry in the context of the price of the natural gas expected to increase from 30 to 100. • As a promising solution, the production of Syngas from non-recyclable / non-hazardous waste (SRF) of by-products (biomass) represents an opportunity to substitute the natural gas consumption and to avoid the dependence to a unique energy source 5

  6. Project Idea Rational • Even if the gasification technology is known for years, there is a lack of demonstration at full scale / full operation 24/7 and there is few demonstration with non-recyclable waste or by-products • The feedstock must be diversified according to the local conditions of legislation and availability, in quantity, in cost, in time • The demonstration will be achieved by a given feedstock (tbd) but the diversification will be targeted from the beginning of the project • The Syngas quality will be set, by the gas treatment unit and the process control dedicated, according to the application foreseen • A methodology for design and implementation will help for • Dissemination and increasing the renewable energy resources integration while enhancing the efficiency in the use of these resources • Setting specifications and requirements for the substitution of fossil-fuel energy while assessing the energy efficiency potential in each of the considered sectors and, in particular in the demonstration sites 6 6

  7. Idea Impact • Energy Source (long term impact) • Reduction of Greenhouse Gas • Diversification of energy source by substitution of the natural gas • Reduction of the dependence to the price index of fossil fuel • Small scale, localized production (‘at the farm’) will become feasible • Process Technology • To determine the suitable technology for fossil fuel substitution by biomass or residues which can be adapted to the sectors tackled • Process technology of the entire chain needs to be considered to keep the research effort geared towards solutions and production • Design and Dissemination • To develop specific design criteria, basic equipment and control procedures for biomass and/or residues combustion for each sector • Integration into existing plant with the current industrial processes to maximize their thermodynamic efficiency

  8. Existing Project Team • As Project Coordinator : CIRCE (Spain) as an RTO together with a long experience in thermal analyses in industry and gasification/combustion processes (we could team up and expand) • As Partner : Terreal (France) as a final user of the Syngas and as a representative of the Ceramic sector • As Academic Institution : Ecole des Mines d’Albi (France) with a long experience and track record in “waste to energy” projects (engineering for waste and biomass valorisation)

  9. Looking for a leader and for partners… • Waste management company or Utility management company for the feedstock management • Technology provider for the gasification unit and the gas treatment unit before utilization • Engineering company for process integration into an existing plant including process control and process adaptation to the various usage of Syngas (mainly fossil fuel substitution) • Energy intensive users (cross-sectorial demonstration outside Ceramic) • Academic institution or SMEs for feedstock characterization, process evaluation, LCA and LCC
