Mayflower Compact • First Known document involving English colonies in America and government. • Written because the people writing the document landed at Plymouth. • They were not under the authority of the King • Citizens of Plymouth wanted rules and laws so everything ran smoothly.
Origins • Magna Carta: the idea that people had political rights. • Said that the king could not raise taxes without of consulting a council of nobles or church leaders.(1215)
Reasons for Mayflower Compact • Pilgrims, English settlers seeking religious freedom. • Established Church: the chosen religion or religion of the state. • Church of England( King of England was also head of the Church). • Persecution: mistreatment or punishment of people because of their religious beliefs.
What does it state • Pilgrims still owed loyalty to their King and to England. • They did not want to start a new country. • Wanted to escape religious persecution and the Church of England.
