  1. The Iroquois Constitution and the Mayflower Compact DRIPPING SPRINGS H.S.ENGLISH n MR. JEFF OLSEN FALL 2013

  2. Today’s Agenda • Vocabulary for Friday • Why do we have governments? • What is self-governance? • What were the origins of the Iroquois Constitution and the Mayflower Compact? • What are their similarities and differences?

  3. How do governments emerge? • Theocracies – Religious rule based on spiritual beliefs and organizations. • Monarchies – Established based on wealth and strength, often in a symbiotic relationship with a faith-based establishment. • Totalitarianism – A concentration of power in the hands of one ruler or group

  4. How do governments fall? • An internal or external force, acting independently or in concert with another force, seizes power from the ruling party. • Coups and other insurrections are often military in nature. • Peaceful transitions of power are rare, but one notable example is the signing of the Magna Carta.

  5. The Magna Carta • Signed in 1215 by King John of England, the document forced limited the power of the monarch and his feudal barons. • The charter required King John to proclaim certain liberties and accept that he could not act arbitrarily. For example, no "freeman" could be punished except through the law. • The charter was an important part of the historical process that led to constitutional law in the colonization of America. • Thus, England's legal system was used as a model for many of the colonies as they were developing their own.

  6. The Iroquois Constitution • Linked five Native American nations – the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca – located in and around present-day New York. • Key principles include: • Respect for each other’s tribes and its members • Respect for Nature • Honesty, justness and a calm spirit

  7. The Mayflower Compact • Signed by Pilgrims upon arrival in Massachusetts in 1620. • Recognized those who signed the document as servants of God and England. • Emphasized value of the group over individuals as determining factor whether their new society would be successful, success equating to life or death.

  8. In a small group • Identify areas in both documents in which concepts such as self-governance, liberty, respect for others and the importance of unity are addressed. • In a Shaffer-esque paragraph, explain what one of these concepts means to you: • Topic Sentence • Concrete Detail • Concrete Detail • Commentary • Conclusion
