  1. 2.2 Mayflower Compact: Six C’s Main Idea This document is the first example of self-government and majority rule in the English Colonies. Why Does It Matter Now This ability and ideals will extend to the colonies feeling of self-government during the revolution 150 years later.

  3. Daily Guided Questions (DGQs) • What is the importance of the Mayflower Compact? • Why might sailing to new lands to advance Christianity so important to the Puritans?

  4. Roanoke Island and Sagadahoc • First sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh in Virginia, 1585 and 1587. -Settlers disappeared. • Plymouth Company sponsored Sagadahoc (modern-day) Maine. -Settlers went back to England.

  5. Joint-Stock Company • Investors fund colony and give charters (document that gives rights to a person or group); get profits. • In 1607, Virginia Company sends 150 people to found Jamestown.

  6. Puritans and Pilgrims • Religious group, want to purify Church of England. • Separatists form independent congregations. • In 1620, flee to escape persecution, found Plymouth Colony.

  7. Mayflower Compact • Puritans landed outside the limits of Virginia Co. charter. -Did not apply to them. • Obey laws agreed upon for the good of the colony. -Self government. -Majority rule.

Six C’s of Primary Source Analysis • Content=What is it saying, in your own words? • Citation=Who wrote it, where, and when? • Context=What is going on in the world, the country, the region, or locally. • Connections=Use prior knowledge, connect the source to things you have learned about. • Communication=POV, any bias, is the source reliable? • Conclusions=What did you learn, did the source help you learn more?

It was drawn up with fair and equal laws, for the general good of the settlement, and with the will of the majority. From time to timemeet for the goodness of the colony. • Citation=All 41 of the adult male members on the Mayflower signed the Compact. Being the first written laws for the new land. November 11, 1620. Northern Virginia, (Mass.) • Context=Age of Exploration, colonization of the “New World”, and Jamestown.
