  4. By the end of Today’s class, you will be able to: What is an essay? What does an essay look like? What are the parts of an essay? What are the differences between paragraphs and essays? How do we achieve coherence, cohesion, unity, and development in an essay? What are the constituents of an essay introduction?

  5. What is an essay? “ An essay is a piece of writing that has at least [four] paragraphs. All of the paragraphs in an essay are related to the same topic” (Herzfeld-Pipkins, 2006, p.53).

  7. What are the parts of an essay? An essay includes three main parts: Introduction (one paragraph) Body (at least two paragraphs) Conclusion (one paragraph)

(3 at least) Shorter One indentation Concluding sentence One Idea Three parts Introduction and Thesis statement Supported by at paragraphs 2 at least Longer One indentation for every paragraph Concluding paragraph What are the differences and similarities between paragraphs and essays?

  9. How do we achieve coherence, cohesion, unity, and development in an essay? Coherence: using transition words and phrases between paragraphs/ using a logical order Cohesion: repeating key words from the thesis statement in topic sentences and in the whole essay. Repeating one or two words from one paragraph in the first sentence of the next paragraph. Unity: all topic sentences and details relate to the thesis statement Development: providing a sufficient number of supporting ideas (examples, details, reasons, facts) to support the controlling idea of the essay
