  1. Chromosome Counting!

  2. What are chromosomes? • Double rods of condensed chromatin • Chromatin is the material in cells that contains DNA and carries genetic information (the blueprint of the organism)

  3. Chromosomes Numbers • All plants and animals have a certain number of chromosomes in their body cells called the diploid (or 2n) number.

  4. Lets try some examples!

  5. Zea mays (corn or maize)has 20 chromosomes • How many chromosomes does the parent cell normally have? • How many chromosomes does the parent cell have right before it divides? • How many chromosomes does each of the daughter cells have after cell division?

  6. Mus musculus(house mouse)has 40 chromosomes • How many chromosomes does the parent cell normally have? • How many chromosomes does the parent cell have right before it divides? • How many chromosomes does each of the daughter cells have after cell division?

  7. Cambarus clarkii (a crayfish)has 200 chromosomes • How many chromosomes does the parent cell normally have? • How many chromosomes does the parent cell have right before it divides? • How many chromosomes does each of the daughter cells have after cell division?

  8. Vampires (like Edward) have 50 chromosomes • How many chromosomes does the parent cell normally have? • How many chromosomes does the parent cell have right before it divides? • How many chromosomes does each of the daughter cells have after cell division?
