  4. Where to Start? • Investigate Service Levels for Refuse and Recycling • Determine Existing Costs • Quantity in Containers

  5. What to Look For? • What is in your waste receptacles? • What can be recycled? • % of recyclable types?

  6. Choosing a Provider • Explore the different providers • Do they recycle all wastes? • Determine the costs

  7. Be Careful! • Is there a recycling program already on campus? • Who are they? • Political impact

  8. Buy-in & Implementation • Make sure all parties have input • Everyone on campus has a role • Students are the key to success • Administration must manage the program • Custodial impact should be minimal! • This program should save money!

  9. Summary • You will not turn the “trash into cash” • Districts WILL save money by implementing a well managed program • The program must include waste reduction, reuse (if possible) and recycling
