National Perspective • 55 State educational agencies – including all 50 States, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Bureau of Indian Affairs – are participating in Reading First. • To date, SEAs have received over $2.8 billion in Reading First grants. • Over 4,700 schools in almost 1,400 districts have received Reading First subgrants. Students and Teachers • Reading First is improving reading instruction and raising student achievement for more than 1.5 million students. • Reading First is providing professional development to more than 92,000 teachers – and that’s not counting the teachers who participate in statewide Reading First professional development activities. Statewide K-3 Literacy Professional Development • Face-to-face training • Open to any school with K-3 students willing to work within the basic structure & expectations of Reading First: • Implement Schoolwide model for Reading First • Collect and use formative assessment (DIBELS) • Two-year commitment Oregon Department of Education
