  2. #13 -Millard Fillmore • Born: January 7, 1800 • Birthplace: Locke, New York • Political Party: Whig • Term: 1850-53 • Vice President: none • Children: 2; 1 boy and 1 girl • Died: March 8, 1874

  3. #13 -Millard Fillmore • At a young age he became an apprentice to a wool carder. • 1819: attended New Hope Academy for 6 months. • 1823: admitted to the bar. (lawyer) He opens his own law practice in Buffalo, New York. • 1828-31: elected to the New York state legislature.

  4. #13 -Millard Fillmore • 1833-35: elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as an Anti-Mason. • 1837-43: elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Whig – to oppose Andrew Jackson. • 1849: Becomes Taylor’s Vice President. • July 9, 1850: Taylor dies in office. • 1850-53: appointed 13th President of the U.S.

  5. #13 -Millard Fillmore • 1850: Compromise of 1850 passed. It includes the much debated Fugitive Slave Act. • He is unable to be re-elected to a second term. • Whig party loses ground and is dismantled. • 1858: marries Caroline McIntosh. Retires from politics. • March 8, 1874: dies in Buffalo, New York.
