  1. Liberal or Conservative

  2. Foreign Policy Liberal Foreign Policy based on spreading democracy and humanitarian aid. Support for foreign alliances. Conservative Foreign Policy based on American interest first.

  3. Federalism Liberal The national government needs to get involved in both domestic and foreign issues. Conservative The primary purpose of the federal government is to deal with international issues, while domestic issues should be left to the states and/or the people

  4. Traditional Values over Social Freedom Liberal Promotes individual social freedoms and equality over established traditional values, norms, and mores. Conservative Individual social freedom is important, however individual private decisions should not take priority of the welfare of the group or established traditions.

  5. Rights vs. Protection Liberal The rights of criminals need to be respected and defended. Conservative Individual Protection more important than civil liberties during some situations.

  6. Economic Freedom vs. Economic Equality Liberal The government should interfere with the free market to promote equal opportunity and protection. This includes economic protections. Conservative Economic freedom of choice and property over equality of outcomes.

  7. 2nd Amendment Liberal In favor of stricter gun measures with the belief that they will better protect the individual. Conservative Preserving the 2nd Amendment is important. 2nd Amendment protects individuals.

  8. Civil Rights Liberal It is the responsibility of the federal government to promote equal opportunity and protection throughout the nation. Conservative It is the responsibility for the state and individuals to promote change. Federal regulations usually miss the mark in terms of real change.

  9. Fiscal Policy Liberal It is the government’s job to steer the market with spending and taxation. The government has tools to lower unemployment and increase production. Progressive taxation Conservative Government never creates wealth they only re-distribute it. Real wealth only happens with meaningful production. Keep markets free. There are already too many “broken windows” Flat tax

  10. Directions: Read the quote and determine if the speakers has a liberal or conservative point of view. Provide an explanation for your answer. For example, “the speaker seems to be promoting social freedom.” Determine what purpose of government is being fulfilled. Example: Unite, Provide, Protect, Order, Justice, Securing Liberty. Is the speaker promoting liberty or Authority? Explain Who said it?

  11. In my health care bill, I said insurance companies need to provide contraceptive coverage to everybody who is insured. Because this is not just a health issue, it's an economic issue for women. It makes a difference. This is money out of that family's pocket. Romney not only opposed it, he suggested that in fact employers should be able to make the decision as to whether or not a woman gets contraception through her insurance coverage. That's not the kind of advocacy that women need. Liberal President Obama

  12. Man is not free unless government is limited. Conservative President Reagan

  13. Today, there are too many Americans who do not get the preventive health care services they need to stay healthy. Many people put off preventive care because the deductibles and copays are too expensive. That's why I fought for the Affordable Care Act, which will make sure all Americans have access to quality preventive health care services Liberal President Obama

  14. While most people in this country struggle to make ends meet, a few of the most affluent citizens and corporations enjoy tax breaks and loopholes that nobody else gets. Right now, Warren Buffet pays a lower tax rate than his secretary--an outrage he has asked us to fix. We need a tax code where everyone gets a fair shake, and everybody pays their fair share. Liberal President Obama

  15. They want your vote, but they don't want you to know their plan. And that's because all they had to offer is the same prescription they've had for the last 30 years: "Have a surplus? Try a tax cut." "Deficit too high? Try another." "Feel a cold coming on? Take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations, and call us in the morning." Now, I've cut taxes for those who need it, middle-class families, small businesses. But I don't believe that another round of tax breaks for millionaires will bring good jobs to our shores, or pay down our deficit. I don't believe that rolling back regulations on Wall Street will help the small businesswoman expand, or the laid-off construction worker keep his home. We have been there, we've tried that, and we're not going back. We are moving forward. Liberal President Obama

  16. Government does not create wealth. The major role for the government is to create an environment where people take risks to expand the job rate in the United States. Conservative President George W. Bush

  17. We will watch a portion of President Obama’s 2013 State of the Union address. Make a list of liberal points. (start at 3:35) 2013 State of the Union address We will now watch a portion of the Republican response to President’s Obama’s 2013 State of the Union address. Make a list of conservative points. Republican response

  18. In the beginning of this course you learned about the purposes of government outlined in our preamble. Unite Order Protect Provide Justice Securing the Blessings of Liberty If you asked a democrat to rank these purposes which do you think they would rank first? If you asked a republican to rank these purposes which do you think they would rank first? If you were to ask the average American to rank these purposes what would they put first? 1930’s- Great Depressions 1950’s- Red Scare (Cold War) 1960’s Civil Rights Movement 1980’s Cold War 2004 2012
