  1. Name 5 qualities a good citizen/human being has: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

  2. Someone with good character is…..

  3. What is empathy? • Empathy is the ability to understand the world from another person’s point of view AND motivation to treat another kindly based on that understanding. • Taking another person’s perspective (or, alternatively, “putting oneself in another person’s shoes”). • Think of a scenario where a person has shown empathy for someone else. Would you say that this person is generally a nice human being?

  4. You have probably heard the proverb, “Don’t criticize a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes.” • What does this mean? In what ways can you “walk” in someone else’s shoes? • Think of your actions and behaviors your classes. If your teachers treated you this way- how would you feel? • What if were telling me a story about… how would you feel if I talked over you and interrupted your story?

  5. If the tables were turned…..How would you feel? • If you put a lot of work into a project and you were presenting it in front of the class and the teacher put her head down on the desk or started working on something else and paid no attention to your project…How would you feel? • What if you made a mistake on a test or a homework assignment- like misspelling a word and your teacher made snide/negative remark in front of the class….How would you feel?

  6. Which teen do you want to be- the thorn or the blossom? Empathetic teens really blossom and give joy to those around them. Teens that lack empathy are like thorny bushes– you try to avoid them. Let’s strive to think how our actions/behaviors impact other students in your class and how your behaviors make your teachers feel. Don’t be the thorn…its just not a good quality to have.

  7. Why is empathy an important life skill? Competency and empathy go hand in hand. Empathy is part of emotional intelligence. Therefore, a person who is empathetic is more intelligent. Without the skill of empathy, a boy/girl cannot grow up to be a responsive father/mother, or caring husband/wife.
