  1. Year 8 Fabrics Technology Objective: Creating a cushion cover for teenagers.

  2. Rationale Students have been introduced to equipment and skills in the Fabric Technology room. Having developed some confidence with this equipment they can further develop their skills to create an individual item for a specific purpose. This task will allow students to further explore the decoration of fabrics using a variety of elements. They will work through an investigation of suitability of fabrics types and decoration styles.

  3. Outcomes and Aspects Students are working through: Outcome 1: Technology Process Aspects: Students will investigate, devise, produce the cushion cover and do a self evaluation. Outcome 6: Technology skills. Students use tools and equipment to manipulate materials to produce a specific result.

  4. Learning Task Task: To design a cushion cover – for a specific target audience within a given time frame. Emphasis is on basic construction methods and decoration.

  5. Explicit Teaching • Health and Safety • Setting up Equipment: correct machine setting, control of machine (Pivot corners) over lockers, threading • Demonstrate types of stitches and fabric decoration techniques • Demonstrate how to thread a needle, measure and mark fabric, cut out using dressmakers scissors, do simple hand sewing (tacking and sewing a button) and use various fabric paints. • Set out a design so it can be read and copied by others • Transfer and manipulate images from a computer to fabric • Investigate and research relevant information from the Internet and books

  6. Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategies • Discussion and demonstration on various pieces of equipment. • Students to practise knowledge of parts, and their purpose of on various machines. • Brainstorm on types of decorations, pros and cons. • Variety of fabrics, decorations etc, brought in – students to view and sample. Discussion on advantages and disadvantages. • Resources: texts, internet access, samples, equipment for practise and exploration. • Teacher notes, diary style entries, student evaluation, completed design briefs and on balance judgements where necessary.

  7. Using Information and Communication Technology tools to assist Learning, Teaching and Assessment Students can access computers to copy style designs onto transfer sheets and then iron onto fabric. They can then use the computer to manipulate their design to suit a purpose, e.g.. Rotate the design. Students use texts/internet to locate information on types of fabric.

  8. Length of Task 6 – 8 weeks 1 x Double Lesson per week This equates to 1 ½ hours.

  9. Resources Equipment – various paints, glitter glues lace, felt, buttons etc. Sewing Machines and over lockers. Computers Sewing Equipment e.g. scissors, needles. Text Books

  21. Teacher Reflection • I would like to incorporate a survey so students could gain information on their proposed designs. • More self evaluation along the way. • More detail in the investigation area e.g. samples of fabric and a sample of a form of decoration • Introduce peer evaluation for the final product.
