Economic Impact: • Economic benefit to London economy: $1.3 billion • University budget, re-invested locally: $850 million • Research funding: $187 million • 35,000 employees/students purchase local goods and services • 200 new jobs at Western in 2004 • Construction of 17 new buildings in 2004, providing space for students and researchers, and opportunities for industry (i.e. construction and jobs)

Connected to Industry Partners:A centre for knowledge transfer • Industrial contracts valued at $8 million annually include local companies: • General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada • Transform Automotive • Licensing income averages more than $.5 million annually: • Ultra-fine Powder Fluidization • DSL Hearing-aid Technology • More than 60 reports of invention and 12 patents issued since 2002

Active in the Community:An integral part of London • 27,000 alumni currently reside in London • Administration, staff, faculty and students are involved in more than 100 community-related Boards, Associations and Agencies • Active involvement with LEDC in business development; BCIP/RIN proposals • Prominent local leaders on Western’s Board of Governors include: Don McDougall, Hank Vander Laan and John Nash

Active in the Community:An integral part of London (cont.) • Collaboration with the city to bring The Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities to London in 2005 • University-Community research in support of the public sector (e.g. Thames Valley Children’s Centre, Children’s Aid Society) • Recruitment of top minds to London: Four Rhodes Scholars in past seven years and 72 Canada Research Chairs allocated to Western • Seymour Schulich’s gift of $26 million to Western represents the largest-ever grant to an institution in London

Active in the Community:Reaching Out • Bi-monthly meetings with local businesses • Development of community access point through Western’s Web site. • Technology showcases strengthen ties with industry partners • Building (local) L3 and (regional) C4 technology transfer alliances • Ivey Builds: Volunteer initiative with Habitat for Humanity to fund, design and build a wheelchair-accessible home in London
