  2. Overview: Aids the body in immunity by taking excess fluid out of the blood and recirculating the blood.

  3. Lymph Nodes: • Help protect the body • Remove foreign material ( bacteria and tumor cells) • Produce lymphocytes that function in immune response • Actually collects the lymph

  4. Lymphatic Vessels • Form an elaborate drainage system that pick up excess tissue fluid: lymph • Just transports lymph • When fluid accumulates in the tissues it causes edema. (Swelling) • The type of tissue surrounding the vessels is stratified columnar.

  5. Tonsils: • Line the throat or pharynx • Trap and remove any bacteria or foreign pathogens entering the throat When the tonsils become infected (tonsillitis) halitosis occurs.

  6. Thymus: • Peak level functions at youth • Lymphoid mass down low in the throat overlying the heart in between the lungs • Produces hormones that carry out protective roles in the body The Thymus gland is located in the thoracic cavity cavity.

  7. Spleen: • Soft blood-rich organ that filters and cleanses blood of bacteria, viruses, and other debris • Most important function: destroy worn out red blood cells and return some of their breakdown products to the liver • Located in the left side of the abdominal cavity, just beneath the diaphragm

  8. Appendix: • A tube-like off shoot of the first part of the large intestine • Vestigial
