  1. “Smart pedagogy” • Near term: implement Berkeley lower-division CS curriculum at U.C. Merced • Longer term: implement and evaluate innovations in engineering education enabled by technology

  2. U.C. Merced time line • Fall 2002: some Merced courses are offered at local community colleges. • Fall 2002: faculty hiring begins. • Fall 2004: some engineering core courses (including lower-division CS) are offered at Merced.

  3. Challenges of U.C. Merced • Provide the best engineering curriculum and continually improve on it. • Expand our notions of engineering instruction and courseware. • Support a wide array of instructors as they implement U.C. Berkeley materials. • Create a model of curriculum development, dissemination, and support.

  4. Features of CS curriculum • Almost all courses involve projects. • Course content is cumulative. • Students often work in groups. • Assessments are often qualitative.

  5. Technology can help with … • Explicit linking and rationale for course components • Tighter integration of explanations, animations, exercises, projects, assessments • Support for group work and online discussions • Support for reflection and higher-level problem solving
