  2. Who will Elizabeth marry? As soon as Elizabeth came to the throne in 1558, people expected her to get married, and started to wonder about who her husband would be. Marriage was seen as essential for a wealthy and powerful woman, especially a queen. Marriage would not be for romantic reasons, but for other reasons... What reasons are there for Elizabeth to marry?

  3. Reasons for marriage

  4. The pros and cons of marriage From Elizabeth’s point of view, there were both advantages and disadvantages to getting married. Advantages Disadvantages Marrying a foreigner might lead to meddling in English affairs. Produce an heir to continue the Protestant religion and avoid fighting after she dies. Parliament would stop pressuring her. Marrying an Englishman would lead to jealously and in-fighting. Could create a powerful alliance to increase England’s strength. A husband might try to take over and rule.

  5. Elizabeth’s suitors Over the course of her reign, Elizabeth considered marriage proposals from over 20 men! On the next five slides, you will see information about some of the more serious possibilities. Imagine you are a member of the Privy Council (the group that advised Elizabeth). What would you advise Elizabeth to do?

  7. What did Elizabeth decide to do? What did you advise Elizabeth to do? In fact, Elizabeth never married, although she continued to consider her different suitors until she was in her 50s! Instead, she said she was married to her country, telling parliament: I have already joined myself in marriage to a husband, namely the kingdom of England.
