  2. Disaster Relief Team Members Structures Group Gil Bullock Adam Bechtel Daniel Morton Lauren Myers Research Group Janice Soriano Taylor Shirley MiSun Kong

  3. Area of Impact Latin American/Caribbean Region

  4. Devastation of Haiti

  5. Scope • Design an affordable disaster resistant home • Withstand natural disasters • Immediate Relief • Design additions to be attached to the home at a later time

  6. Expected Deliverables • Complete Booklet Manual for Haiti home • AutoCAD Drawings (eg. Elevations, Additions, Floor Plan) • Cost/Benefit Analysis • Construction procedure

  7. Project Timeline • Complete Haiti Booklet • AutoCAD Drawings • Disaster Resistant Techniques • Complete Booklet Manual • Research • Existing disaster resistant techniques • Climate, culture and resources of countries • Country Background Research • Country profiles • Memorandum of Understanding Spring 2008 Spring2009 Spring 2011 Fall2007 Fall 2008 Fall 2009 • Haiti Core Design • Affordability Data • Disaster Resistant Techniques • Roof & Wall Design • Research • Cultural considerations for Haiti • Preliminary floor plans • Finished Product • Regional Booklet for all countries • Brochure

  8. Core Home Additions Previous Semesters

  9. Semester Goals • Design and draw the Additions to the Core • Disaster techniques to implement • Decisions on materials and perform Structural Analysis • Cost Analysis of the entire home • Complete Booklet Manual for Haiti

  10. Current Specific Parameters Provide multiple design options for the additions • Roofing • Window/Door • Wall Configurations Research techniques/retrofitting for both Core and additions • Practically implemented • Cost beneficial

  11. Core Design Add-on Layouts Add-on Elevations Looking Ahead Structural Progress

  12. Core Design Add-on Layouts Add-on Elevations Looking Ahead Structural Progress

  13. Core Design • Core model previously designed in Catia. • Created floor plan and profiles of core home in AutoCad. • Halted progress on our core model to focus on add-on rooms. • Copied existing core home plans into AutoCad.

  14. Our Halted Core Design

  15. Existing Core Home Design

  16. Comparisons • Similarities • About 3 x 5 meters • Shed roof • Composed of concrete blocks • Accommodate add-on rooms • Use sheet metal for roof • Designed to provide immediate relief to Haitian families Differences Our Core Home -Roof comprised of concrete and sheet metal -Has doors built on sides for add-ons -Not designed with front porch -Roof slants from back to front -Designed with the goal of making the home disaster resistant Existing Core Home -Roof comprised of wood truss and sheet metal -Has windows to be turned into doors for add-ons -Designed with porch in front of home -Roof slants from side to side -Designed to provide immediate shelter to Haitian families

  17. Core Design Add-on Layouts Add-on Elevations Looking Ahead Structural Progress

  18. Add-on Layouts • Six add-on layout options created. • List narrowed down to three. • Plans of the existing core homes with the add-ons created in AutoCad.

  19. Add-on Layouts Core room Bedroom Patio

  20. Factors for Layout Choices • Simple designs • Symmetry • Patios well-received in Haiti • Personal preference

  21. Core Design Add-on Layouts Add-on Elevations Looking Ahead Structural Progress

  22. Add-on Elevations • Add-on elevations created in AutoCad along with the plans.

  23. Add-on Elevations

  24. Core Design Add-on Layouts Add-on Elevations Looking Ahead Structural Progress

  25. Concerns • How to slope the roof so that add-on rooms are tall enough without using a gable roof. • How to connect the roofs of the add-on rooms to the roof of the core home. • Structural Analysis

  26. Looking Ahead • Roof Connection • Roof Materials • Steel Rebar Placement • Nail Placement • Disaster Resistant Techniques to Implement

  27. Disaster Resistant Technique

  28. Research Focused On…. • Prevent water from leaking inside the house • Withstand the high wind gusts

  29. Focuses • Prevent water from leaking inside the house • Withstand the high wind blow

  30. DisasterResistant Technique • Well Reinforced Masonry Wall • Provide general stability to the load path of the home (top to bottom) • Reinforcement at the top ensures that any connections made to the room have no chance for collapse ⇒ Need to consider: This is mostly costly retrofit technique but should not make much difference if applied to the construction procedure

  31. DisasterResistant Technique • Capillary Break using Elastomeric Coating • Elastomeric Coating is sprayed on the area where slab and concrete wall ⇒ seal small crack ⇒ Rainwater would be halted • Have to consider a spray is necessary to apply the material (Look for code in Haiti)

  32. DisasterResistant Technique Roof Structure • Moderately pitched hip roof • Minimize leak and wind load and ensure water shed away from wind • Roof Truss • Provide strength of the roof ⇒ Need to consider: Can be installed onto the add on rooms?

  33. Focuses • Prevent water leaking inside the house • Withstand the high wind blow

  34. DisasterResistant Technique • Mortar Joint Resistant to water (Mortar Toughs) • Reduces ability for moisture to penetrate into the house • 2 kinds of joint • Concave • V shape

  35. Pitched Hip Roof

  36. Roof Truss

  37. DisasterResistant Technique • Hurricane Strap • Tie with truss to supports/shapes the roof to the framework of the home • Prevent uplift to the roof ⇒ Need to consider: Can be applied to the concrete home?

  38. Semester Goals • Design and draw the Additions to the Core • Disaster techniques to implement • Decisions on materials and perform Structural Analysis • Cost Analysis of the entire home • Complete Booklet Manual for Haiti
