  1. Do Now Affect is a verb. You use affect when you are talking about influencing something. IE: The arrow affected the aardvark. Effect is a noun. You use effect when you are talking about a result. IE: The class got candy as an effect of the test. http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/affect-versus-effect.aspx There was a bad _______ after I ate that rotting meat. She ___________ed an air of bousie. The rain ______________ Ms.Lusk’s hair. The sound _____________ were eye popping.

  2. Announcements • Argumentative essays were interesting and most of us still have some work to do. • You have until this Friday to rewrite and turn in your next copy. • No tutoring today after school. I’m going to Classroom Central. • Gonzaga men lost on Saturday, but it was a GREAT game! • http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId=320770194 • Test on Friday over genetics.

  3. Argumentative Tasks Debriefed • What are some reasons as to why we should allow genetic modification? • What are some reasons why we shouldn’t allow genetic modification? • If you had to choose to genetically modify your child would you? • Why or why not? • Do you think about the things that you eat now before you eat?

  4. Punnett Squares revisited • In genetics, we use Punnett Squares to help us understand the probability of something occurring within an offspring.

  5. How are Punnett squares used? R r R R A Lot like a multiplication table. Female alleles (genes) are across the top, and male alleles are down the left side.

  6. RR Rr FIRST: Multiply the two top left columns. RR Rr When the female and male alleles are “multiplied,” the result combo of the alleles gives the possible genotypes of the offspring.

  7. Let’s try one together A recessive gene W = Normal Hairline w = Widow’s Peak

  8. Let’s say you have two parents who are heterozygous for the gene What are their genotypes? Ww and Ww 1. What are the chances that their offspring will have a widow’s peak? 2. What are the chances that their offspring will not have a widow’s peak but will carry an allele for a widow’s peak? 3. What are the chances that their offspring will not have a widow’s peak and will not carry a gene for a widow’s peak?

  9. Let’s see what happens if the parents have the following genotypes: • Ww and ww • 1. What are the chances that their offspring will have a widow’s peak? • 2. What are the chances that their offspring will not have a widow’s peak but will carry an allele for a widow’s peak? • 3. What are the chances that their offspring will not have a widow’s peak and will not carry a gene for a widow’s peak?

  10. In pairs • We are going to be working through some Punnett Squares.

  11. Independent Practice • On your own, complete the final two Punnett Squares.
