  1. Glimpses of KG1

A Day in KG1 • Children arrive. • Exploratory Play. • Circle Time: It’s a time during which children point out their names, talk about the calendar and see what roles they will be playing for the day. • Daily Special Classes are: Arabic, Islamic for Muslim students, P.E. (Physical Education), Computer and Library. • Unit of Inquiry. • Creative Arts such as singing and dancing.

  3. Reading • Shared book which includes looking at parts of a book. • Individual reading. • Nursery Rhymes: Each week, we look at a nursery rhyme and have a follow-up activity. • Phonics: We learn a letter a week. We emphasize on the sound of the letter.

  4. Writing • Children draw what they like. Teachers ask them what is their picture about. Then they write what the children have said. • News. • Show and tell.

  5. Math • Math instruction using concrete material. • Numbers 1-10. • 4 basic shapes (Circle, Triangle, Rectangle and Square). • Patterning. • Graphing. • Matching. • Informal Measurement.

  7. Unit of Inquiry • Art • Craft • P.E. • Science • Social Studies • Language Arts • Math • Technology • 5 units: Learning Through Play is Fun (All year round), School Days, Who I am, Animals and Us, Earth and Sky-Wondering Why?

  8. Field Trips For each unit, we have a field trip planned. Here are some ideas of places that we’ve been to: • Bus ride around the school • The beach • Action Zone • Parks (Khalifa and Khalidiya) • Bowling • Circus

Homework • Collection of pictures for color and sound of the week. • Practice letter, number writing. • Student’s folder: Please look through your child’s work and encourage them to tell you what they have done. With a lot of praise and support from home, their confidence will increase and will achieve more.

Communication • Weekly newsletter. • Grade level page website. • Parent letter about unit of inquiry. • Reports at the end of each quarter. • Parent/Teacher Conferences. • Student-led Conferences. • Parents can e-mail teachers through the school website. • Phone contacts can be made through the school switchboard.

KG 1 Computer: • Controlling the computer: • Know lab safety & care of computers. • Be able to name the parts of the iMac computer & the purpose of each part (Monitor, keyboard, mouse, speaker, headphones) • Using the mouse: Controlling the movement, click accurately, Double click, Drag & drop • Be able to follow the oral instruction within a program • Variety of Software: • Reader Rabbit Preschool • Jumpstart Preschool • The internet: • www.linktolearning.com (Multilinks) • www.scholastic.com • www.litlefingers.com • There is computer class once a week. The class starts with 10 mins of instruction time and the children work on the computer for 20 mins.

KG 1 Music: • Introduction of terms: Sound, Silence, Rhyme, Song • Introduction of instruments: Beat, Bells, Drum, Tambourine • Sing songs together & learn new songs: • Nursery rhymes • Songs with movement • Alphabet & counting songs • Songs related to ongoing PYP Unit KG 1 Library: What is a library? Rules of the library & care of books. The class starts with story time where the children share their experiences related to the story. From the beginning of November they borrow books every alternate week which has to be returned the following week.
