  2. What is formatting? 5.1 Formatting - The way text appears on the screen 3 levels of formatting ~character – affects a single character, word or sentences of text (slides 3-18) ~paragraph – affects an entire paragraph ~page – affects the entire document Chapter 5 5.1 - 5.10

  4. Undo and Repeat commands • An action done by mistake can be undone easily • Ctrl + Z, Edit>undo • from the standard tool bar • You can undo more than 1 action • An action can be repeated OR redone • Ctrl + Y, Edit> repeat action • from the standard tool bar Chapter 5 5.1 - 5.10

Selecting Text • Text needs to be selected to format it. • Text is selected by clicking the mouse and dragging the pointer over any amount of text, from a single character to the entire document. • Once text is selected, pressing a key (any key) replaces the text • Deselect – click outside of the selected text, use an arrow key, press Esc key Chapter 5 5.1 - 5.10

  14. Character formats – Style 5.6 • The way a character is emphasized is its style. Found in the font dialog box and on the formatting toolbar. Can use keyboard shortcuts • Most common: • Bold – printed darker so that words and phrases stand out on a page. (Ctrl + B) • Italic – is slanted and is mostly used for emphasis (Ctrl + I) • Underline – has a line under it. (Ctrl + U) • Regular or normal is the default style Chapter 5 5.1 - 5.10

  15. Preview a document 5.7 • A document can be previewed to see how it will appear when printed. • File > Print Preview • Use print preview to ensure accuracy before printing Chapter 5 5.1 - 5.10

Character Formats Effects – Superscripts and Subscripts • Superscript is an effect that reduces the size of the text and raises it to the top of the current line • 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th periods • Subscript is an effect that reduces the size of the text and lowers it to the bottom of the current line. • H20, CO2 • Font effects in the Font dialog box • Format > Font • See slide 10 Chapter 5 5.1 - 5.10

  20. Paragraph alignments 5.9 • The alignment of text in a paragraph refers to its position relative to the sides of the page. See slide 19 • Place insertion point in the paragraph to be formatted. • Format menu > Paragraph • Right-click > Paragraph Chapter 5 5.1 - 5.10

Notes • Formatting is to change the way text looks on the screen. • Undo – last action is reversed (ctrl+z) • Text is selected by clicking and dragging • When text is selected any key pressed will replace the selected text • Format > font = font dialog box (slide 10) • Format > paragraph = paragraph dialog box (slide 21) • Formatting toolbar top of screen between the ruler and the standard toolbar.
