New Spain • Very few people gold and settled in New Spain at first but by Spanish colonies. • Many people came hoping to get rich because gold and silver and other came to start large farms. • The Spanish needed many workers so they forced North America Indians to be slaves, but thousands were dying from dieses. • As more and more Indians died the colonists looked for other workers, so they brought African slaves so they so they were working under the same terrible conditions which the Indians were in. • Some colonist became concerned with now the Indians were being treated.

  3. Battles Over Claims • By the 1500s several European nations including Spain had sent explorers to claim land in America. They would put up crosses to claim the land. • After establishing New Spain in 1535 Spain formed colonies to protect its land and govern the people. • Most of Spain’s colonies where govern by Spanish leader in Mexico City . • Spanish claim large parts of North America. • Colonies –land ruled by other countries.

  4. Settling the Borderlands The borders stretched across what are today‘s Northern Mexico and Southern of Untied States from Florida to California. In 1565 Pedro Menendez defiles sand 1,500 soldiers, sailors, and settlers sailed from Spain. However many Indians were forced to work on missions forms and ranches. Some settlers in the borderlands of Northern Mexico built large estates called haciendas Spanish and the animals they brought with them changed lined for many Indians groups

  5. Settling the Borderlands • Spanish soldiers lead the way building presidios of force in the borderlands. • Spanish missionaries also helped settled Santa Fe, the capital of the new Mexico colony. • Europeans settlements in what is now the Untied States.
