  3. What is Technoslavery? To some, Technoslavery means a world where we are faced with the negative reality of being slaves to our technology. Those who choose to take a negative approach to technology are those who believe we should throw our cell phones out the window and get back to basics because we are too tied to our technology and too distant from the world around us.  These are the people who choose to look the other way!

  4. Negative connotation: Can be viewed as the way our obsession with technology binds us to the devices we use. More simply put - when technology "manages us" rather than when we "manage technology."  Reality : Whether we like it or not technology has a hold over us - especially our children. We must embrace the fact that technology is  a huge part of our lives and focus on ways to manage it rather than having it manage us. What is Technoslavery -REALLY?

  7. How technology is invading our lives: • The current classroom environment is becoming antiquated  • We need to prepare our students to be technology leaders and users • Finding ways to manage technology rather than letting it manage us 

  8. More to ponder... • Digital divide - the have and the have-nots.     Does the socio-economic gap widen? • Dangers associated with the internet • Who is protecting our children when they are the pioneers           Our Biggest Obstacle:

  9. Q.  How do we keep up with an ever changing      technology? A business perspective: Keeping up is about following someone else’s agenda: the bloggers and tweeters who trot out invitations to the latest beta. The marketers, publicists and journalists who blanket us with coverage about the latest hot tech phenomenon. And yes, the tech consultants who charge tens or hundreds of thousands to add musts to your already long to-do lists. The minute you stop trying to keep up, you open a far more exciting possibility: getting ahead with what matters to you, your team and your business.   12. What do we give up and what do we give to our students? • We GIVE UP:  • Personal time • Instructional time • Self confidence • The "safe way" of completing a lesson • We GIVE OUR STUDENTS: • Valuable lessons • Experience • Play • A choice of how to learn

Many teens spend 30 hours a week on 'Screen Time' 70% of our nation's 4-6 year olds have used a computer There are over 91 Million Searches performed on Google each DAY! Four out of five teens (17 million) carry a wireless device (a 40% increase since 2004) What changes do we make?

  16. Becoming An Effective Model of Digital Age Work Is the technology being used “Just because it’s there”? Is the technology allowing the teacher/students to do Old things in Old ways? Is the technology allowing the teacher/students to do Old things in New ways? Is the technology creating new and different learning experiences for the students?

How do we remain effective in the classroom? * QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER * • How has the introduction of new technology into the classroom modified the ways that subjects and materials are presented, researched and applied?   • What are the new dynamics of the classroom?  How are teachers' approaches to education evolving? • How has the role of the teacher/educator changed as a result of new educational technology? • What are some factors influencing teachers’ use of technology in the classroom?

Remaining Effective * Don't try to incorporate all your new technology at once.  Choose 1 or 2 things at a time to learn; teach use them effectively For example: • class wikis • digital storytelling • web design *  It is important to keep in mind that any new technologies should: • aid in student development  • increase the effectiveness of the transmission of information • encourage student creativity and expression

  19. Boring?  Understimulated? The "digital natives" - the students • What will the world start to look like as they shape it? • Life in a global and digital society  • Constructivist: "Design for learning rather than plan for teaching" • What is the role that teachers take on in order to be responsible for educating today's students? • entering the workforce in 2020 - 2025 • retiring 2055-2065?

  20. * MODEL and REFLECT* REMAINING EFFECTIVE • Explore technology in front of or with your students • Create an atmosphere of constructivist learning • DON'T be afraid to make mistakes in front of the students you teach  • Our schools and assessments are designed in such a way that mistakes are discouraged • Sir Ken Robinson: • Schools designed to teach that "mistakes are the worst thing you can make, mistakes are to be avoided."

  21. Think about all the great inventions that were created as a result of another person's                       • Sticky Notes • Coca-cola • Penicillin • Cardiac pace-maker • Rubber (tires and silly putty!) • Chocolate chip cookies • Potato chips • Velcro • Frisbee
