    4. Emmett Betts’ Contributions The most prolific of contributors to educational Journals(1300 papers and articles). He was the editor of Highlights for Children and My Weekly Reader. He wrote important books like: Prevention and Correction of Reading Difficulties (1956); Visual Problems of School Children(1947); Foundations of Reading Instruction (1957). Prior to his death (1987) Betts commented: The purpose of the IRI was to train teachers to be perceptive about students, reading behavior.

    5. Major Functions of the IRI Independent level –the level at which the student reads fluently and with excellent comprehension. Instructional level- the level at which the students can make progress in reading with teacher guidance. Frustration level- The level at which the students is unable to pronounce many words and/or to comprehend. Determine strategies for word identification ( sight vocabulary, phonic analysis, context clues) Determine the student’s rate. Determine strengths and weaknesses in comprehension. Determine student’s listening level.

    6. Steps for the IRI Establish a rapport- reduces anxiety Interview student- assess student’s prior knowledge and decoding skills. Apply word lists- determines word identification, structure analysis and phonics. Use oral passages-assess student’s background knowledge and ability to express themselves. Apply silent reading passages-observe student’s behavioral characteristics. Use listening passages-gives an estimate of student’s potential growth in reading.

    7. Conclusions “ A reading test is a useful instrument only in so far as it measures abilities which are employed in particular reading programs” Witty and Kopel. “ Informal tests based the reading materials used in the classroom and charts of faulty and difficulties observed when the child is reading provide the best basis for planning effective instruction”. Donald. D. Durrell.
