  2. When did the civil war occur? • It began April 12, 1861 • The war ended 4 years later on April 9, 1865 • It occurred between 1861 and 1865

  3. WHO WAS INVOLVED IN THE CIVIL WAR? US states The states involved that were union states were California, Oregon, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, and Kansas. The states involved that were confederate states were Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia. The states involved that were border line states were Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware.

  5. Who was involved? not the U.S. • The French were also involved, and they helped the confederacy.

  6. Alliances • The French, the British, and the Confederates were all allies. • And the northern states and California and Oregon were allies.

  7. Union Leaders • Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant - he was the Union’s head general. He defeated Robert E. Lee (leader of confederate army). Later he became a president. • Abraham Lincoln- president of the United States. Supported the Union, and didn’t want any states to leave the United States. • William T. Sherman- He never commanded in a major Union victory. Was made colonel of United States infantry in May, 1861. first military experience was the Seminole War. • John Brown- he was strongly against slavery, and it is said with his determination, he opened the eye of an entire nation. He organized protests against slavery. He was found guilty of treason against Virginia and was hanged at Charlestown.

  8. Confederate Leaders • Jefferson Davis- Confederate States made him provisional president . He wasn't able to get enough money to fight well, and he could not get other countriesto help him. • Robert E. Lee- he was the confederate head general. He surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865 • Stonewall Jackson- he was a lieutenant general. He earned his nickname after the first battle of Bull Run. He was know n to jump in front of one of his soldiers that was about to be killed and kill the opposing soldier. • Braxton Bragg- he was a writer, traveler, and artillery commander. He was from Warrenton North Caro0lina

Battles of the Civil War Bull Run 1 • July 21, 1861 • at Manassas Virginia. • Casualties- north- 3000 south- 2000 • Involved- Brigadier General Irvin McDowell, thirteen independent brigades under Bonham, Ewell, Jones, Longstreet, Cocke, Early, Holmes, Kershaw, Evans, Jackson, Bartow, Bee, Smith, and a cavalry brigade under Stuart. Brigadier General Pierre G. T. and Brigadier General Joseph E. Johnston commanding the Potomac and Shenandoah armies.

Vehicles • Horse- you know what a horse in. people rode on them, but mostly only generals did. • Limber- a two-wheeled carriage that carried an ammunition chest • Caisson- a two-wheeled carriage that carried two ammunition chests and a spare wheel • Train- transported troops, ammunition, and supplies over the U.S.

  18. How did the civil war affect America’s future? • Now we are the United States of America. We are united, unlike it was during the civil war. • Now we have one flag • It has out ruled slavery in the U.S. • It has united the beliefs of America

  19. How the civil war ended • It ended at the battle of Appomattox court house, where Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union general Ulysses S. Grant. • It ended April 9, 1865 • Some people still wanted to fight. • On April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, even though the war was over.

  20. Fact in a book that is contradicted by a website • Book- the civil war and emancipation, by James A.
