  3. Balance • Equilibrium or steadiness among the parts of a design. It is the visual distribution of weight. • Formal balance: symmetrical • Informal balance: assymmetrical

  4. Proportion • The spacial, or size, relationship of all of the parts in a design to each other and to the whole. Also called “scale”. • Body is 8 heads tall. 3/8 is waist to top of head. 5/8 is from waist down. Styles that complement that natural figure are more flattering and stay in style longer.

  5. Emphasis • Concentration of interest in a particular part or area of a design. One part is more important or more noticeable, it is the center of the outfit. • It is best to have one area of interest.

  6. Rhythm • The pleasing arrangement of the design elements so the eye moves well over the apparel. It directs the flow of eye movement. • Repetition: Can be a repeat of lines, shapes, colors, or textures • Gradation: Also called progression. An increase or decrease in design elements. • Transition:A fluid rhythm created when a curved line leads the eye over an angle. • Opposition: hen lines meet to form right angles. • Radial Arrangement: Line come from a central point.

  7. Common Body Types • Tall and Thin: • Things that would be good to wear: • Gathered or pleated skirts and pants • Flared or wide leg pants • Horizontal stripes • Things to avoid: • Tight fitting dresses, skirts or pants • Small patterns • Bold verticals

  8. Common Body Types • Short and Heavy • Things that would be good to wear: • Vertical lines • Empire, A-line, narrow silhouettes • Asymmetrical closings • Things to Avoid: • Two-piece or Two-colored outfits • Horizontal Stripes

  9. Common Body Types • Top Heavy • Things that would be good to wear: • Simple, slim tailored shirts • V necklines • Slim sleeves • Things to Avoid: • Clingy or shiny things on top • High necklines and large collars • Ruffles, bows, trims above the waist

  10. Common Body Types • Thick Middle • Things that would be good to wear: • Unfitted, but not full garments • Tubular Silhouettes • Details above the waist • Things to Avoid: • Fitted waistlines or tight belts • Baggy or bulky fits at waistline

  11. Common Body Types • Hip Heavy • Things that would be good to wear: • Attractive collars • Wide shoulder lines, yokes • Light colored tops with dark bottoms • Things to Avoid: • Tight fitting pants or skirts • Belts or horizontal bands at hips • Shiny, clingy fabric or bold prints below the waist
