Wages in Selected Industries, 1914  • Occupation Wage per Hour • Iron molder (Hamilton) 35 cents • Iron molder (Toronto) 29 cents • Iron molder (Hamilton) 32 cents • Laborers (average for Ontario) 21 cents • Cotton spinners (women) 13 cents • As you can see that isn’t a lot of money! For how hard most of them worked.

  13. How The Strike Began • The immediate post-war period in Canada was not a time of peace. Social tensions grew as soldiers returned home to find large numbers of immigrants crowded into cities and working at their former jobs.High rates of unemployment among returned soldiers compounded their resentment towards the immigrants.
