  6. How do volcanic eruptions effect the Earth’s temp? 1. Dust, ash, glass, and rock are released into the air during a volcanic eruption.

  7. 2. These things block the sun from reaching earth!

  8. Clouds of ash can cover entire continents! In 2010, the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull erupted, spewing thousands of tons of ash into the air. 95,000 European flights were cancelled as a result of the eruption!

  9. What information do Ice Cores & Tree Rings tell us? -Tell us how the CLIMATE has changed over time

  10. Why do we care about ice? Ice core- a sample of ice and snowthat have built up over thousands of years -tell the amount of gassesin Earth’s atmosphere over time.

  11. What do ice cores tell us about the climate? • Black or brown coloring- VOLCANIC ERUPTION (color caused by the ash) • Yellowish color-Pollution in the air • Bubbles-Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is in the air (lots of bubbles means that is was HOT!)

  12. Why do we care about trees? Tree Rings:tell the amount of rain over time -Big Rings- A LOT OF RAIN -Skinny Rings- DROUGHTS

  13. Why do we care about trees? Tree Rings -One ring= one year *Youngest- on the outside *Oldest- on the inside

  14. STATION TIME! -Groups of three -3 stations: 1. Tree Ring 2. Ice Core 3. Index Fossils -At each station you will answer the questions onthe bottom of your notes. -You will have 8 minutes at each station before Ms. K will say ROTATE!

  15. DO’S -Remain at your group • TALKING TO YOUR 2 PARTNERS • On Task • Answer all questions fully • Respect the classroom and materials DONT’S -Walk around the room -Move before Ms. K tells you to -Mess with the materials -talk to other groups -be off task! -throw things
