  1. The World’s First Alarm Clock “Watch with me and pray lest the Tempter overpower you. For though the spirit is willing, the body is weak.” Mark 14:38, TLB

  2. The Facts, Please! • The first alarm clock invented by man, so far as we know, was a candle. Medieval monks slid a lighted candle between their toes when they took a nap. When the flame reached their skin, their “hot foot” would wake them up! A New England clockmaker, Levi Hutchins, is credited with inventing the first clock with a bell that would wake a person at a set time.

  3. The Facts, Please! • The world’s first alarm clock, though, was made by God. It was a rooster. Because a cock in the East crowed during the night at regular times, those times were called cockcrowing. Cockcrowing was used by the Romans when they divided the night into four watches (areas of time). They were: late, midnight, cockcrowing, and early. The Jews divided the night into three watches. Cockcrowing was at three o’clock in the morning.

  4. The Facts, Please! A rooster crows by means of an organ called The syrinx. It is located where the windpipe splits into two bronchi (the tubes that carry air to his lungs.)
