  1. Texas A&M Forest Service Safety Message 02-13 CARC Paint Safety Chemical Agent Resistant Coating (CARC) Paint CARC Paint is the camouflage pattern green or sand colored paint on all military vehicles, many of which end up in the DOD Firefighting Property Program (FPP). CARC has evolved over several generations and has gotten less hazardous to users over that time. It is difficult to tell which version you are working with so the highest level of protection is advised. Welding on CARC surfaces is not advised—spot remove CARC first. CARC dust is an environmental hazard and must be controlled so large surface CARC removal should be indoors. Follow the guidelines below when removing or working with CARC: Spot feathering with grinder in the open air—wear impermeable gloves, dust proof coveralls, eye-pro, and a *half-face air purifying respirator with VOC filters. Sanding indoors—wear impermeable gloves, dust proof coveralls, and a *full-face supplied air respirator. Alternate method—steam or pressure clean the surface, feather chipped areas with light grinding, treat oily stains with Dawn detergent, cover entire surface with a coat of primer, then paint with selected colors. *Use of a respirator may require a written respiratory protection plan Useful links for more information on working with CARC: http://olive-drab.com/archive/od_tb43_0242_carc.pdf http://olive-drab.com/archive/carc_paint.pdf Indoor chip feathering process using a grinder
