Cell Cycle and Division. The Cell Theory. Cell Theory is based on 3 points :  1) All living organisms are composed of one or more cells  2) Cells are the basic units of structure and function in all organisms. 3) All cells come from already existing cells.

The Cell Theory Cell Theory is based on 3 points:  1) All living organisms are composed of one or more cells  2) Cells are the basic units of structure and function in all organisms. 3) All cells come from already existing cells. • The activity of an entire organism depends on the total activity of its independent cells.

  3. Cell survival: All cells need to… • Eat and use energy • Store info and control functions • Detect and respond to changes in the environment • Eliminate waste • Build and repair parts • Reproduce

  4. The Cell Cycle • Cell Theory states cells come from pre-existing cells. • Cells are needed for the repair, growth or maintenance of a species. Cell Division is controlled by the Cell Cycle: • The cell cycle is how cells spend their day (aka the life cycle of a cell)

  6. The Cell Cycle 1) Interphase(actually 3 mini-phases): i.G1: Rapid growth phase: • The cell takes in sugars and proteins for growth and repair. ii. S: Synthesis phase: • The cell prepares for cell division by duplicating chromosomes in the nucleus. • Duplication of genetic material must take place before cell division. iii.G2: Growth and preparing for cell division: • After chromosomes duplication, there is another time of cell growth and preparation for cell division.

  7. 2) Cell division = MITOSIS and Cytokinesis • A short part of the cell cycle. • Mitosis: cell duplication, produces identical copies of a cell • Cytokinesis: The splitting of cytoplasm between the two new cells.

  8. Life spans of different cells: • Brain Cell : life long • Red Blood Cells: 120 days • Stomach Lining Cells: 2 days • Liver cells: 200 days • Intestine Lining cells: 3 days • Skin cells: 20 days
