  1. DO NOW INSTRUCTIONS: • OPEN YOUR AGENDAS TO WEEK 10/9/2012 2. WRITE YOUR SOCIAL STUDIES HOMEWORK

  2. NOTES ON CORRECTED WORK

  3. TASK: SOIL TREATMENTWHY ARE FOREST FIRES MORE BENEFICIAL TO SOIL HEALTH THAN ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS LIKE CHEMICAL PESTICIDES AND ARTIFICICAL FERTILIZERS?SKILL: COMPARE AND CONTRAST INSTRUCTIONS: • USING R.A.F.T. GRAPHIC ORGANIZER, ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION: “WHY ARE FOREST FIRES MORE BENEFICIAL TO SOIL HEALTH THAN ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS LIKE CHEMICAL PESTICIDES AND ARTIFICICAL FERTILIZERS?”

  4. EXCELL VOCABULARYTECHNICAL WORDS:POLLUTANTS, PESTICIDES, ARTIFICICAL, FERTILIZERS • POLLUTANTS • Dictionary Definition: • Apollutant is substance or energy introduced into the environment that has undesired effects, or adversely affects the usefulness of a resource. • SENTENCE: • “POLLUTANTS WEAKENS THE SOIL.” • REPEAT: “POLLUTANTS, POLLUTANTS, POLLUTANTS.” • THUMBS UP: after I read IF the word/phrase applies to POLLUTANTS : • UNDRINKABLE WATER • BEES AND BIRDS DYING • CAR EXHAUST • REPEAT: “POLLUTANTS”

  5. EXCELL VOCABULARYTECHNICAL WORDS:POLLUTANTS, PESTICIDES, ARTIFICICAL, FERTILIZERS • PESTICIDES • Dictionary Definition: • A pesticide is any substance used to kill, repel, or control certain forms of plant or animal life that are considered to be pests. • SENTENCE: • “mostpesticides can be harmful to people or pets.” • REPEAT: “pesticides, pesticides, pesticides.” • THUMBS UP: after I read IF the word/phrase applies to PESTICIDES : • UNDRINKABLE WATER • BEES AND BIRDS DYING • INSECTS EATEN AWAY FARM CROPS • REPEAT: “PESTICIDES”

  6. EXCELL VOCABULARYTECHNICAL WORDS:POLLUTANTS, PESTICIDES, ARTIFICICAL, FERTILIZERS • ARTIFICIAL • Dictionary Definition: •  Made by humans; produced rather than natural. • SENTENCE: • “ I DO NOT EAT ANYTHING THAT IS ARTIFICIAL, LIKE SWEETNERS.” • REPEAT: “ARTIFICIAL, ARTIFICIAL, ARTIFICIAL.” • THUMBS UP: after I read IF the word/phrase applies to ARTIFICIAL: • SODA • APPLE • SOMEONE HAS SURGERY AND GETS AN INPLANTED HEART MADE BY HUMANS • REPEAT: “ARTIFICIAL”

  7. EXCELL VOCABULARYTECHNICAL WORDS:POLLUTANTS, PESTICIDES, ARTIFICICAL, FERTILIZERS • fertilizers • Dictionary Definition: • is any organic or inorganic material of natural or synthetic origin (other than liming materials) that is added to a soil to supply NUTRIENTS- nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.” • SENTENCE: • “Most fertilizers that are commonly used in agriculture contain the three basic • plant nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.” • REPEAT: “fertilizers, fertilizers, fertilizers.” • THUMBS UP: after I read IF the word/phrase applies to PESTICIDES : • UNDRINKABLE WATER • BEES AND BIRDS DYING • APPLIED TO SOIL MAKE PLANTS GROW FASTER • REPEAT: “fertilizers”

  8. F COMPARE AND CONTRASTING: BENEFITS OF FOREST FIRES: LINES 3-6 STATE THAT, “recent research shows that forest fires are actually beneficial to soil because they play an important role in helping to maintain the earth's nitrogen cycle.” • IN ADDITION, LINES 7-14 STATE THAT, “Researchers from the University of Montana recently discovered that whenever there is a forest fire, the charcoal deposited into the ground helps to stimulate the conversion of ammonia to nitrates. This conversion perpetuates the nitrogen cycle and it enriches the soil with nitrogen, a necessary component of ecological health.” FURTHERMORE, Forsyth and Kenneth Miyata in their bookTropical Nature: Life and Death in the Rain Forests of Central and South AmericaSTATE THAT, “nitrogen is a necessary component of proper plant growth. Without it, plants would be unable to survive.” FOREST FIRES CLEARLY ARE BENEFICIAL TO THE SOIL AND PLANT GROWTH. WHEREAS, ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS LIKE CHEMICAL PESTICIDES AND ARTIFICIAL FERTILIZERS • IN COSTRAST, ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTANTS LIKE CHEMICAL PESTICIDES AND ARTIFICIAL FERTILIZERS ARE HARMFUL TO THE SOIL AND PLANT GROWTH. LINES 15-17 STATE THAT, “Environmental pollutants like chemical pesticides and artificial fertilizers are known to damage the earth's nitrogen cycle.” LINES 24-26 STATE THAT, “Plants that live in nitrogen-deficient soils...often lack secondary defensive compounds. AS A RESULT, PLANTS DIE.
