  1. Tips of the Day

  2. Tip for August 26th, 2008 • Go to Class • Sounds simple, but it makes a huge impact • Don’t let your friends tell you otherwise • Don’t be late. Professors notice it and will remember you for this if for nothing else. • Important Deadlines • August 27th is the last day to add a first 8-week class and last day for 100% refund for dropping first 8-week class. • August 29th is the last day to: • register or add a full semester class • drop first 8-week course without a "W" • receive a 100% cancellation of fees for dropping a full term class while continuing to be enrolled. No fee adjustment for dropping an individual class after this date. • have Fall 2008 college based fees adjusted by changing colleges.

  3. Procrastination • #1 Enemy of college students3 Basic Types ( according to Dr. Joseph Ferrari of De Paul University) • Thrill-seekers, who wait to the last minute for the euphoric rush. • Avoiders, who may be avoiding fear of failure or even fear of success, but in either case are very concerned with what others think of them; they would rather have others think they lack effort than ability. • Decisional procrastinators, who cannot make a decision. Not making a decision absolves procrastinators of responsibility for the outcome of events. • Make lists • Divide Big Projects into Smaller Ones • Do the Hard Stuff first • Make a habit of spending 5 minutes a day organizing yourself • Use your planner, create a filing system, or have a To Do box

  4. Tip for September 2nd, 2008 Class Etiquette – Show some respect • Turn your phone off or on silent when in class • Do not text or check your texts when in class • You aren’t as sneaky as you think Don’t talk while your professor/speaker is speaking • One day soon, if you haven’t already, you will be in a situation where you will have to speak to a group. Treat them as you want people to treat you.

  5. Tip for September 16th, 2008 You and Your Professors • They are not like your teachers in high school • Plan to see them during posted office hours • Send an email or call the department secretary to make sure they will be there • Email is a formal means of communication in the context of school or work; please sign every message at the bottom, use polite language, capital letters, punctuation, greetings and salutations.  Please avoid abbreviations, slang and netspeak. • You should go to them when you are having problems in class • Most of them will really want to help you, but don’t wait until the last minute!

  6. Which Letter to Use??? Hi Amy/Dr. Koster/Professor Koster, My name is Christie Smith, and I am a student in your Fundamentals of Chemistry class that meets on T/R at 7:30am. I am emailing you because I am concerned about my success in the class. I am a dedicated student majoring in Nursing. As you probably know, my GPA is so important to me as I prepare for Nursing School. I was wondering if I could meet with you, at your convenience,to discuss my concerns. I look forward to your reply. Thank you, Christie Smith 002259644 Hey I don’t understand what’s going on in class and I can’t fail because I have a scholarship and my mom wants me to drop it but just don’t know what to od.  I need to meet with you asap because I need you to help me know if I should drop the class or keep trying my hardest. I have to do good b/c my gpa is so important for nursing school and I wont get in unless I have at least a 2.75. ?!?! I need you to tell me when you can meet with me. Call me today between 2 and 8 so I can get this figured out. Thx  Christie

  7. Tip for October 7th, 2008 Facebook • Keep it squeaky clean or lock it up – never put any pictures of yourself online that you would be embarrassed for your grandmother to see. • It may surprise you to know who is looking at your profile • Professors • Administrators • People checking your references for a job

  8. Tip for October 14th, 2008 • 2nd 8 week classes begin tomorrow!!!

  9. Tip for October 14th, 2008 Attitude & Gratitude • Always ask people to help you, never demand anyone do anything for you right away • One of my former professors loved to say, “A lack of preparation on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.” • When you mess up, say so and apologize. People will be much more willing to do everything they can to help you if you take responsibility. • Don’t come at people with a confrontational stance. This makes people immediately defensive, and they aren’t receptive to helping you. • If you need to ask someone for something such as a letter of recommendation, give them ample time. • Then send a thank you email or a note. This makes a huge impression on people!

  10. Semester Recap What Worked? What Didn’t? What Else? • Time Management • ELC • Test Anxiety with Dr. Martindale • Quality Writing Center • HPER Tour • Academic Planning/ Registration Prep • Pat Walker Health Center • Academic Honesty – Monica Holland • Financial Mgmt – Garrison Financial Institute • Career Planning • Study Abroad

  11. Tip for December 9th, 2008 Take responsibility for yourself and your degree • Your parents may want to do everything for you, but you need to learn to handle things on your own. • You need to keep up with your degree requirements, classes you need, and dates to register, drop, or submit applications. • Don’t always expect that someone else will take care of everything for you.
