  2. Class Objectives • Identify the major causes of the War of 1812 • Identify the main theatres and battles of the War of 1812 • Define the major points of the Monroe Doctrine • Define the transportation improvements under the American System

Causes of the War of 1812 • British Impressment -The British navy seized American ships traveling to Europe and drafted Americans into the British navy • Tecumseh’s Confederacy -Indian chief launched attacks on Americans using weapons provided by British in Canada • The War Hawks -Young Congressmen from the west and south called “War Hawks” led by John Calhoun and Henry Clay demanded war with Britain

  4. Activity: Theatres and Battles • Using pages 204-205, fill out the worksheet provided • Must include the locations, outcomes, important people, and events • Label the map using page 204 • 20 minutes 15 points

  5. Results of the War • Treaty of Ghent (1814)- signed on Christmas Eve officially ends war • Armistice is declared • In 1817, the Rush-Bagot Treaty is reached which limited British warships on the Great Lakes • In 1818 Britain and the U.S. agree to a joint occupation of the Oregon Territory

The Monroe Doctrine • In 1815 after the defeat of Napoleon, nations such as Spain, Portugal and Russia wanted to increase their land in America • Wanting to control the Western Hemisphere the Monroe Doctrine was issued which states the following: • American Continent to be free of any European colonization • All governments in America Republics • Any involvement by European countries in America would be considered a threat to America • U.S. would not interfere in European affairs

  8. Other Acts and Treaties • The Adams Onis Treaty -Spain gave the U.S. Florida in 1819 2. The American System -Developed transportation system, new protective tarrifs, led to Second National Bank- proposed by Henry Clay 3. McCullough vs. Maryland -States cannot tax agencies of the Federal Government

  9. Transportation • The American system led to three major advancements in transportation in the U.S. • National Road- MD to IL • Railroads • Erie Canal- linked the Hudson River to the Great Lakes The Industrial Revolution that had arrived in the U.S. made this possible
