The Coming of War International and Domestic Events Prepare the New Nation for War
The Rise of Tecumseh • American settlers moving into Northwest territory • British and Native Americans were there • Much of the land was gained in the Treaty of Greenville • Native Americans never agreed to the treaty • British did not want to fight directly • Gave supplies and military aid to Native American tribes
The Rise of Tecumseh • Tecumseh – Shawnee chief • Skilled military leader, good speaker • Wanted to unite all tribes in areas that Americans were trying to settle • Founded a village for followers near the Wabash and Tippecanoe Rivers
War on the Frontier • William Henry Harrison – Governor of the Indiana Territory • Thought Tecumseh a threat to American power • Tecumseh refused to follow treaties – Harrison warned him not to resist the U.S. • Harrison raises an army and marches close to Tecumseh’s village while he’s not there • Battle of Tippecanoe – Nov. 7, 1811: started by Native Americans, who then retreat and have their village destroyed
The War Debate War Hawks Opponents • Members of Congress who favor war with Britain • Thought British encouraged Tecumseh • War = chance to expand • Florida, Canada • Believed that NOT declaring war was the same as giving up independence • Strong support in South and West • Strongest = New England Federalists • Impressment and trade restrictions damaged business • Wanted to renew friendly business ties, not start another war • People would suffer – taxes, loss of life, etc. • U.S. not ready to fight Britain • Army and Navy were too small
Declaration of War • President James Madison • Elected 1808 • Faced trade war – impressment of soldiers and violations of U.S. neutrality • Pressure from War Hawks • Madison – Britain was in “a state of war against the United States” • Allowed Congress to make the decision about going to war • Voted – decided to declare war on Great Britain • South and West vs. MidAtlantic and New England • Madison gets reelected a few months later • Serves as President over the War of 1812
