  1. The Greek Olympics • Greeks honored their gods by competing in sporting contests. • The largest event took place every four years in Olympia, a city in southern Greece.

  2. The Greek Olympics • The event was held to honor Zeus and was called the Olympic Games. • Male athletes competed in chariot races, wrestling, and throwing events.

  3. The Greek Olympics • The Greeks held these games every four years for over 1,000 years. • If two or more Greek city-states happen to be at war with each other when the game date arrived, war was halted for the duration of the games. 

  4. The Olympics • Today the Olympics include 28 sports, and both men and women compete. • Talk with your partner, and compare and contrast ancient Greek Olympics with modern day Olympics. VS
