  1. Do Now: • Independently annotate the song lyrics from yesterday. • You may use your annotation guide. • FOCUS on how ENDER would relate to these lyrics. • You have 7 minutes. Homework Check • Please put your two complete vocabulary cards on the right side of your desk.

  2. Agenda SWBAT describe how Ender’s character changed throughout the novel by using a CSI. • Do Now: Annotation Practice • Hook: Portrait Presentations • INM: Characterization of Ender through Character Autopsy • GP: CSI of how Ender changed (p 35 and 159-160) • IP: Independent CSI (p 308-309) • Closing: Review and Prizes • Homework: Two vocabulary cards due and add page numbers to character autopsy.

  3. INM • How do we look at a character? We look HOW the author develops or reveals the personality of the character, not just WHO they are. (think about WHAT makes you who you are, not just who you are) Characterization – the depiction of personality in literature (how a character’s personality is revealed) • Character foil – a persona that serves a specific purpose in a narrative, such as to be a sounding board for the protagonist (called a confidante), or to point out the flaws in the character’s plans, etc. • Protagonist – the main character of a narrative whose desires and goals drive the plot of a narrative. • Antagonist – the source of opposition to the protagonist’s desire, i.e. the person or situation opposing the protagonist • Conflict – the tension between the desire of the protagonist and the opposing force of the antagonist(s) • Countertrait– a character trait that deviates from or contradicts a character’s distinguishing character trait(s), rendering the character complex and therefore less predictable. • Nomenclature – the names and titles an author gives his or her characters.

  4. GP: • How did Ender change throughout the novel? (Consider how each of the items in the character autopsy changed for him) Determine a color, a symbol, and an image that represents Ender in two parts of the novel (p 35 and p 158-159)

  5. IP: • Using the last page assignment, create your own CSI of the final product Ender turned out to be at the end of the novel. Color, Symbol, Image for p 308-209

  6. Closing/Homework: • Prizes • Review terms • Homework Two more vocabulary cards Add page numbers and quotes to character autopsy giving text evidence of Ender’s development.
