  1. Adult Teacher Training Workshop Central Church of Christ Delois H. Smith January 7, 2012

  2. Teach the Word Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2Tim. 2:15 Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. 1Pet. 3:15

  3. Teach the Word Memorization I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Ps. 119:10-11 Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me. I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts. Ps. 119:98-100

  4. Choose topic or theme. Brainstorm general principles and key words in the theme. Using a chain-reference, concordance or topical bible, research and record all related passages. Read scripture references in context (the word or phrase in the chapter unit). Allow the Word and the Spirit to guide as you develop the lesson—do not force your view, opinion or position. If using supporting materials such as books or articles, test them against the scriptures, not make the scriptures support them. Testeverything.(I Thess. 5:21). 12. Serving The Lord WithGladness Newcomb Street Church of Christ Ladies Day August 12, 2012

  13. Serving The Lord with Gladness • Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship theLord with gladness; come before him with joyfulsongs.Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Psalm 100:1-5

  14. We were dead in our transgressions and sins. Objects of God’s wrath. Saved by the grace of God. Made us alive in Christ Jesus. Seated us in the heavenly realms. Gave us the gift of salvation and eternal life. Ephesians 2:1-10 Serving the Lord with GladnessWhy we serve Him with joy

  15. Serving the Lord with Gladness • Ephesians 6:7-8 Serve Wholeheartedly • Colossians 3:15-17; 23-24 Sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. Work at it with all your heart. • Ephesians 5:15-20 Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  16. Serving the Lord with GladnessJoy In Service • I Corin. 15:58 give yourself fully to the work of the Lord. • 2Corin. 5:15 we live for Him, not for ourselves. • Heb. 12:28 we worship God with reverence and awe. • Psalm 119:77 your law is my delight.

  17. True Worship I Chron. 16:29 Psalm 95:6 Psalm 96:9 Matt. 4:10 John 4:24 Rev. 14:7 Psalm 84:10 False Worship Ex. 20:4 Lev. 26:1 Deut. 7:25; 11:16 Isa. 42:8 Jer. 10:5 I John 5:21 Acts 14:8-20 17:29 Serving the Lord with GladnessIsaiah 44:6-28 Example of a Contrast Format

  18. Serving the Lord with GladnessWhen we come into his presence Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the Lord your God. Keep my decrees and follow them. I am the Lord who makes you holy. (sanctifies and sets you apart). Lev. 20:7 Who can ascend the hill of the Lord? Who can stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. Ps. 24:4

  19. Serving the Lord with GladnessWhen we come into his presence …let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit. 2Corin. 7:1 …without holiness no one will see the Lord. Heb. 12:14 …you ought to live holy and godly lives. 2Pet. 3:11 …for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy”. I Pet. 15-16 Lev. 11:44-45

  20. Serving the Lord with Gladness …offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--- this is your spiritual act of worship. Romans 12:1-2

  21. Serving the Lord with GladnessWorship of Lips and Heart Must Match Ceremonialism vs. The Heart “ These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men”. Isa. 29:11-16 Matt. 15:1-11

  22. Serving the Lord with Gladness Because words are sungin worship to God rather than spoken, does not make them any less binding on us for what comes from our hearts and lips. “ But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken” Matt. 12:35-37

  23. Serving the Lord with GladnessSongs we sing • I Surrender All • Jesus Is All The World To Me • He Is My Everything • None of Self and All Of Thee • Everybody Will Be Happy Over There • He’s My King • I’D Rather Have Jesus • I’m Not Ashamed To Own My Lord • O To Be Like Thee • Purer In Heart, Oh God • This World Is Not My Home • Where He Leads, I will follow

  24. Serving the LordWith GladnessMore Than Joyful Songs “…and whoever wants to be first must be your slave---just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” Matt. 20:24-29 The Secret Service “ Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven…do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving will be in secret”. Matt 6:1-4

  25. Serving the Lord with GladnessMore ThanJoyful Songs Matthew 25:31-46 “Lord, when did we see you hungry, thirsty, see you as a stranger, see you in need of clothes; sick and in prison?” The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me’. Serving the Lord daily as we go.

  26. Serving the Lord with Gladness When I have searched my heart and I have allowed God to search my heart as well. Psalm 139:23-24 When I have consecrated myself before coming into his presence, then my worship is acceptable to him; when I bring him the best of all I have and all that I am. Malachi 1:6-14

  27. Serving the Lord with Gladness Through Jesus therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise---the fruit of lips that confess his name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. Heb. 13:15-16 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord my strength and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14

  28. Serving the Lord with Gladness “Come let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care”. Psalm 95:6-7

  29. The Servant Teacher Fielding Questions “ Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know howto answer everyone”. Col. 4:6 “ A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered” Prov. 17:27

  30. The Servant Teacher • If schedule is flexible, you can entertain questions during presentation. • If someone raises a question when you are limited on time to cover the issues, kindly ask them to hold their question for the Q&A time period; and be sure to ask them first during that time period.

  31. The Servant Teacher Fielding Comments or Questions. • Determine if it is a question or comment. • Repeat what they’ve asked, if a question, then answer. • If a comment, listen for the main information, briefly summarize, then expound.

  32. The Servant Teacher Pesky Peggy Peggy answers all the time and almost every time. She has a comment on each aspect of the topic being discussed. Peggy will comment even if you don’t call on her or recognize her raised hand. Peggy pontificates.

  33. The Servant Teacher • Follow Fielding Questions Rules • Acknowledge Peggy’s first and/or second questions or comments, then acknowledge someone else’s comments or questions before going to Peggy again. • If Peggy continues to comment, then say: “Thanks Peggy, that’s an interesting comment.”; then go on. Don’t comment on Peggy’s statement, this will encourage more comments from her.

  34. The Servant Teacher Takeover Trisha Trisha introduces points and topics that you did not mention, but Trisha raises these issues which sometimes invites comments from others and takes you off point.

  35. The Servant Teacher First, try and find something positive to say about Trisha’s comments, but state that the issue she has raised is not one that you had intended to address at this time. State that maybe it is an issue that could be discussed at a later date. As much as possible, it is important to stay on point and address the slated issues and topics.

  36. The Servant Teacher Ethereal Ethel Ethel intends to make a related point, but doesn’t quite make the connection. It is hard to determine if the point is related and you can see that others are confused as well.

  37. The Servant Teacher When a point is really unrelated and you can’t see the connection, don’t try and make a connection. Acknowledge that you are not sure of the point and ask Ethel to try and rephrase or restate her point. Then address the comment.

  38. The Servant Teacher Bombshell Betty Betty makes a personal or controversial point that stuns you and the group. You can see from the group’s reaction that they’re not quite sure what to make of it!

  39. The Servant Teacher Make a comment that the statement is not one that can be addressed at this time and that if Betty will see you afterwards you will address her comment. If you address a very sensitive and controversial issue, it will usually invite several other comments that will take up a great deal of time to handle appropriately. And if you are not confident in addressing the issue, don’t attempt to.

  40. The Servant Teacher Naysayer Nancy Nancy takes issue with the topic being addressed and your comments. She gives her personal opinions and states them with conjecture and much confidence, but they are not supported with scripture or biblical principals.

  41. The Servant Teacher You would not want to have others be misled with misinformation, so ask Nancy to state the scriptural basis upon which she is making her comments. When and if she does, listen closely for accuracy; then comment. Don’t be afraid to differ and correct---remember Col. 4:6.

  42. The Servant Teacher • Repeating and summarizing questions or comments serve to: -- verify that you have heard them correctly. -- clarifies the point and gets the audience more involved. --allows for you to have the individual repeat or rephrase for clarification.

  49. Live Your Creed I'd rather see a sermon than to hear one any day. I'd rather one walk with me than just to show the way. The eye is a better pupil and more willing than the ear. Advice may be misleading, but examples are always clear. And the very best of teachers are the ones who live their creed.

  50. Live Your Creed I can soon learn to do it, if you let me see it done. I can watch your hand in motion, but your tongue too fast may run. And the lectures you deliver may be very fine and true, but I'd rather get my lesson by observing what you do. For I may misunderstand you, and the fine advice you give, but there's no misunderstanding how you act and how you live.   Langston Hughes
