  1. Aim: How do we use prefixes and suffixes to write more interesting sentences? Do Now: Define each word on your own: deforestation, nervous, resistant

  2. Who are these people? • List the ways in which you imagine what these two people are like. What are their qualities? • Ous, ious,ive – all suffixes that mean to be full of or have the qualities of • Ex. The man is serious. The woman seems submissive.

  3. What do they do? • List all the things you imagine the two people do in their lives. • Ly – suffix – emphasizes the manner in which something is done; creates adverbs (words that describes verbs) • Ex: The live simply. They plainly go through their days.

  4. What is missing? • The painting creates a sullen (sad, gloomy) mood. List all of the things you think are missing from the lives of the two people. • De, Un – prefixes meaning removal, negation or opposition • Ex. These two people are unmoved by life.

  5. What is the American Gothic? • What is your view of the painting? Create a paragraph that incorporates all of the sentences you just wrote.
