  7. Crystalline solids READ AND UNDERSTAND • Crystalline solids have a very orderly, 3 dimensional arrangement of particles. • The particles of crystalline solids are in a repeating pattern of rows. • Examples of crystalline solids include: iron, diamond, and ice

  8. AMORPHOUS SOLIDS READ AND UNDERSTAND • Amorphous solids are made of particles that do not have a special arrangement. • Each particle is in 1 place but not in any order or pattern • Examples of amorphous solids are: glass, rubber, and wax.

  9. Liquids READ AND UNDERSTAND • Liquids have a definite volume but not a definite shape. • The particles in liquids move fast enough to overcome some of the attractions between them • The particles slide past each other until the liquid takes the shape of its container

Special characteristics of liquids • Surface tension causes some liquids to form spherical drops like the beads of water shown on the plant below. • Different liquids have different surface tensions. For example gasoline has a very low surface tension and forms flat drops Name another place that you see beads of water forming. Double click in the white area below and then type your answer

  11. Special characteristics of liquids -----continued • Viscosity- is a liquid’s resistance to flow. For example, honey flows more slowly than water. So, honey has a higher viscosity than water.

  13. Gas • Gas is the stage of matter that has no definite shape or volume. • The particles of a gas move quickly. So they can break away completely from one another. Type the correct word into the purple box above. gas solid viscosity
