  1. Word Sort – Your task… • Create a T – Chart in your notes that looks like this… Compound Mixture 2. Sort the words & write them into the correct column – Mixture or Compound – Please # your words. 3. Underneath the word write in 1 sentence WHY it is a compound or mixture. 2 points for correct placement (50 pnts. total), 2 points for sentence WHY (50 pnts. Total). Total value: 100 points

  2. Happy Wednesday!  11/28/2012DO NOW! • Classify the following images as element, mixture, or compound &explain why:

  3. Ms. Kirkpatrick wants to make pasta for dinner. In 30 seconds, list ALL the materials she would need to cook the pasta. LEQ #4:How does the property of a metal make it good for use in cookware as opposed to anonmetal? What kind of pan would Ms. Kirkpatrick use? Why?

  4. Take away Point: * Elements from Groups 1and 2 often bond with Elements from Groups 16 and 17 HOT Q: WHY????

  5. Guided Notes • Elements in the same group share similar chemical properties • The elements in the 18 groups of the periodic table are also classified into three larger categories – metals, non-metals & metalloids. • These categories are based on general propertiesthat elements share

  6. Guided Notes Continued… • Metals: A metal is an element that is a good conductor or carrier of heat and electricity • 75% of the elements are Metals • Non-Metals: A non-metal is an element that is nota good conductor of heat and electricity • About 24% of the elements are Non-Metals • Metalloids: A metalloid is an element that conducts electricity only under certain conditions • Has properties of both metals AND non-metals • Only 8elementsare metalloids • Also known as a semi-conductor

  7. Let’s Revisit the Periodic Table ! • All elements can be divided into three categories: • METALS • NONMETALS • METALLOIDS

  8. Put on your detective caps! There has been a string of crimes in the Charlotte area… It’s up to YOUR team to figure out what happened.

  9. What will you need? • A crime report hand out • A periodic table • Your class notes

  10. CRIME SCENE 1 • A break in occurred in West Charlotte. The tool used for the break in was found at the scene of the crime. The tool was shiny and would not easily break. What type of element was it made of? METAL

  11. CRIME SCENE 1 • After further testing, the element was found to have an atomic number of 11. What element was it made of? SODIUM

  12. CRIME SCENE 2 • A robbery occurred in Ballantyne. The weapon found at the scene of the crime could not conduct electricity and was not very malleable but dull in color. What type of element was it made of? NON-METAL

  13. CRIME SCENE 2 • The crime lab reported that the weapon was composed of atoms with 6 protons. What element was the weapon made of? CARBON

  14. CRIME SCENE 3 • A poisoning occurred at a home in uptown. The poison was dull in color but could conduct electricity and could be easily molded into different shapes. What type of element was it made of? METALLOID

  15. CRIME SCENE 3 • After further testing, the poison was found to belong to Group 15, Period 4. Which element was used as poison ARSENIC

  16. CRIME SCENE 4 • An attack occurred on the UNCC campus. The victim reported that the weapon used in the assault was shiny in color and had magnetic properties. What type of element was it made of? METAL

  17. CRIME SCENE 4 • The victim reported seeing an “Mg” stamped on the weapon. What element has the atomic symbol Mg? MAGNESIUM

  18. CRIME SCENE 5 • Many people got sick after faulty thermometers purchased from Get Well Soon, Inc. shattered, spilling out a silvery, lustrous liquid substance which was NOT ductile. What type of element was Get Well Soon, Inc. using in their thermometers? METAL

  19. CRIME SCENE 5 • The element Get Well Soon, Inc. was using in their thermometers is the ONLY liquid in the transition metals. What element was the company using in their thermometers? MERCURY

  20. CRIME SCENE 6 • During a bank robbery on Tuckaseegee, the robbers used a type of substance to make everyone in the bank fall asleep. The substance had very little density and the molecules were not packed together at all. Was the substance a solid, liquid, or a gas? GAS

  21. CRIME SCENE 6 • After further testing of the air quality, it was discovered that the substance used to knock out the witnesses has 10 protons. What element was used in the bank robbery? NEON

  22. CRIME SCENE 7 • A carjacking occurred outside of Panther Stadium. The weapon used to shatter the car’s window was very reactive, shiny, and could easily conduct electricity. What type of element was it made of? METAL
